WELCOME TO ST. ANNE

The loss of her mother turned her world upside down and revealed a truth she had never known. Her entire life felt like a lie.

Sonny
Now, she lives on her own terms. She does what – and who – she wants, when she wants. She can’t get hurt if she doesn’t let anyone get close enough. Being lonely is just the price she has to pay. She isn’t about to let a man like Brig get to her, no matter how good his looks or intentions.

Brig
As one of St. Anne’s favorite sons, he has lived a charmed life, never wanting for anything. Family, friends, business – he is wealthy in ways that mean more than dollar signs. He doesn’t know what it means to fail. Foul-mouthed and beautiful, yet cautious, Sonny is everything he never knew he wanted. But when it comes to her, want has become need, and for the first time in his life, he has to fight for something.

Sonny has spent so much time keeping people out that the idea of letting Brig in feels dangerous.

But danger is already coming for her.

The devil himself straightened up and moved to the passenger's door ahead of me. I was still lost in my thoughts, so when he opened the door for me, I absently said "thank you" and climbed into the cab. I guess he had been expecting me to protest his gesture and affirm my ability to open my own door because he still stood there with his hand on the door handle.

"Don't throw the eyebrow at me, Brigham. I am capable of accepting a gentleman's exercise of manners," I said in a quiet firm tone that was much less than my normal level of tenacity. Make no mistake, I knew exactly how rough and tough I sounded to others. Like I told Tish, old habits die hard.

"I know you are, sweetheart. I'm just waiting for you to burst into flames or something. Or is it an internal reaction, like when the Grinch's heart grew two sizes?"

I couldn't help but laugh. I dropped my head back onto the headrest and turned to look at Brig, who looped his arm through the open truck window with a proud smile. "Thanks for that, too."

His smile shifted slightly, more concerned than prideful now, as if my words had touched him somehow. "Anytime. Especially if it means I will hear your laugh or see your smile. You need to do that more often, y'know. Either of them, both of them. It is a sight to see."

I didn't know how to handle someone being tender with me, and began to feel some panic. I shifted in the bucket seat, suddenly uncomfortable and embarrassed that I didn't know how to accept simple human kindness. I felt like I owed him an apology somehow, but when I turned my attention back to him, he was moving to close my door.

"What was that comment about my eyebrow, smartass?" he asked before rounding the front of the truck to get behind the wheel. He got settled in and started the engine, but turned to me before going anywhere. Up went the eyebrow in question. "Hmmmm?" Bless this man for changing the subject.

"Every time I argue with you or say something you don't like, you throw me that look." I nodded once in his direction, and then attempted to replicate it. I could feel my eyebrow being uncooperative, which drew a belly laugh from Brig.

"Don't hurt yourself."

I quickly stuck my tongue out at him and watched his eyes darken. He turned his attention away from me and my mouth and put the truck in reverse. He didn't speak again until he had negotiated us off the shoulder and back into the flow of traffic on Scenic Highway, heading toward my house. "Besides, if I raised an eyebrow every time you argued with me or said something I didn't like, this look-" he pointed to his face as he raised his eyebrow, "would be permanent." He must've anticipated my next move, because he continued before I could move a muscle. "Two things. First, don't go assuming I'm a gentleman. Which leads me to the second. You better keep that tongue in your mouth. I don't think you are ready for what I want to do to it, or how I want you to use it."

Em Frances is a foul-mouthed, filterless Jersey girl who lives in northern Florida with an extremely patient and tolerant husband and their two dogs.

When she isn't writing, or when she's supposed to be writing (lol), she's usually on Facebook, reading or binge-watching TV...and sometimes all three at the same time!

DEEP INTO TROUBLE BY DAWN RYDER-ARC REVIEW

Desire is more dangerous than anything in Deep Into Trouble, the next Unbroken Heroes novel from Dawn Ryder.

Saxon Hale lives for the hunt--taking down the bad guys, stopping them dead in their tracks. His latest mission has him in New Orleans, where people go for the party that never ends. But fun is the last thing on Saxon's mind now that he's a breath away from closing in on a vicious overlord known only as the Raven. Until an innocent young woman unknowingly enters the very deadly game...

Ginger Boyce is a librarian who's growing tired of being so buttoned-up on the job, and when she attends a conference in the Big Easy, she decides to taste the wild side of life. But when her dance with darkness becomes lethal, she's in dire need of protection--and ends up in the embrace of a man who radiates danger and desire. Soon Saxon finds himself Ginger's shield against an enemy whose power they haven't yet begun to face. But will he be able to keep his mind on his mission while the very woman under his care drives him beyond distraction?

Romantic suspense is a hard sub-genre to review.  If you are too vague, there is no point to the review, but if you are too specific there is no reason to read the book.

So, I am going to try for something in the middle.

Saxon and Ginger were, at first look, an odd match.  He is a special forces soldier, she is a librarian.  To say they live in different worlds is an understatement.  But, it works.  The draw they have to one another is compelling, and interesting.  And, it is strong enough to make you willing to believe that both of them would have been willing to be involved with the other...even though the situation they found themselves in was one that would make a lot of people run...witnessing a violent crime is rarely the beginning of a romance.

But in this it works.

I enjoyed this book.  The writing was strong.  The pacing was mostly well constructed, which is important in a romantic suspense...you need to believe the romantic interludes and the danger of the situation.  In this case, I thought the balance was a little too much toward the suspense...not enough to keep me from enjoying it, but it did leave me wanting more.

I recommend this book.

“Hello, Jonas! How lovely to see you. I didn’t know you were back in town.” She offered her hand in greeting.

“Good afternoon, my lovely Rebecca.” He took her hand but lowered his head and kissed her cheek. “I couldn’t resist stopping by to see how you and your Nick are recovering from your adventure.”

Rebecca shot him a sly grin. “I’m flattered we entertained a thought from you, Jonas, but I have a feeling you know exactly what’s going on with everyone who crosses your path.”

He laughed. “Ah, there’s that sassy wit Noah has told me about. I’m glad you are back to your old self, not that you weren’t beauty and grace personified in my presence.” He winked.

Rebecca blushed at the reminder she had met him nearly naked. “Please have a seat, Jonas. Can I offer you something?”

When he simply stared at her, she felt the blush intensify. “That, my dear, is a loaded question, but I’ll leave it alone. You’re about to go up in flames as it is. I wonder why that might be?” He gifted her with a slow sexy grin, then chuckled as he placed a hand upon her back, leading her to the seated reception area.

He could probably feel her pulse race, Rebecca surmised. She was no match for his sexual play. “How can I help you, Jonas?”

“I believe I can help you, love. Noah says there’s a bit of tension between you and Nick. I’d like to be of assistance if I can.”

Rebecca eyed him with embarrassed curiosity. “I didn’t know you were into matchmaking.”

His eyes narrowed. “Curb the brat, love or I’ll give you the discipline you so obviously desire.”

She bristled at his tone, but he simply chuckled. “See? You’re practically begging me to spank you. It’s all over your body language. Nick needs to take a firmer hand with you.”

“I’m not sure what gave you the impression that I enjoy a good spanking or that my attitude is any of your business.” My God, what was wrong with her? She was acting like the brat he accused her of being.

“Knees, Rebecca. Now.”

Her independence warred with her submissive self. She was torn. This man’s tone brooked no interference.

“Now!”

She fell out of the chair and onto her knees, eyes lowered immediately. Dammit, how did he do that?

“Becca! Get the hell up!”

She heard the furious shout and hastily threw herself back into the chair. Nick’s order took precedence in her mind.

She glanced up in time to see Nick’s fist fly toward Jonas’ face. It was caught in the older man’s hand, so Nick threw the other fist. He was abruptly knocked to his butt when Jonas swept both legs out from under him with a precise kick. “Calm down. I was making a point.”

Both Nick and Rebecca looked at him in shock.

Jonas shook his head. “Both of you have to learn to trust; to communicate; to admit your mutual attraction and go from there. Or this D/s relationship is doomed to fail.”

“We don’t have a relationship.” Rebecca whispered. “I wasn’t what he needed.”

“That’s not true!” Nick stammered. “I wasn’t what you needed, Rebecca. I know that.”

Jonas looked at Nick. “Explain.”

Rebecca watched as Nick’s face closed down. “None of your damn business, Blackshire. I want to know what the hell you were doing forcing Rebecca to her knees?”

“I want her. She’s just stated that you don’t, so she’s open to play.”

“I am not!” Rebecca stammered. “I didn’t…I don’t know why I…” she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes.

“So you do belong to Nick?”

She felt the tears fall. She lowered her eyes, unable to look at either man as she told the sad truth. “No.”

“Yes.” Nick hissed, coming to his feet, facing Jonas. “She is mine and I’ll fucking kill you if try this shit again, Jonas. I don’t give a damn if you saved my life or not.”

From New York Times Bestselling author Kristen Proby, comes a steamy new standalone romance in her bestselling Fusion Series

BLUSH FOR ME!

BLUSH FOR ME - Cover

About BLUSH FOR ME:

New York Times bestselling author Kristen Proby continues to delight the senses with the latest novel in her delectable Fusion series.

As the take-charge wine bar manager of Seduction, Portland's hottest new restaurant, Katrina Meyers is the definition of no-nonsense, and she isn't afraid of anything. Well, almost anything: she hates to fly. When she's forced to travel on a death trap with wings, the turbulence from hell has her reaching for any safe haven—including the incredibly handsome guy sitting next to her.

Ryan "Mac" MacKenzie hasn't been able to get his sexy seatmate out of his head. The way she clung to him stirred something inside him he didn't think existed: tenderness. As the owner of a successful wine touring company, Mac thinks he's got a handle on what life can throw at him and he's not prepared for any surprises, especially in the feelings department. And when he brings a tour into Seduction, he sees the petite spitfire he just can't forget. Mac is determined to discover what else they have in common besides fine wine and the inability to keep their hands off each other. But what will it take for two stubborn people to realize that what they have is so much more than a hot chemistry between the sheets and to admit to falling in love…?

There are books you read that you just settle in to, that you just enjoy. That you don't want to end. Ones that you like the characters, there are no issues with the plot that take you out of the story, and you really believe in the relationship that is unfolding.

This was one of those books, and honestly, I am not able to pinpoint any one thing about the book that made me feel this way. It all just worked. I liked Kat, I liked Mac/Ryan and I enjoyed seeing the supporting characters from the other books.

I loved the development of the relationship with Mac and Kat. That he accepted her for who she is. There is a part where she apologizes to him for seeming crazy, and his response is perfect...and so clearly says that he understands her, and that he likes her. This is evident through the book, and it gives it a flow that you can't help but enjoy.

I liked that this book, while it took place mainly in the restaurant setting, also gave a glimpse of Kat in a different setting, which was great for not only the story but for seeing her in a different light, which I appreciated. One of the challenges of a series is keeping them fresh so that while they take place in the same world, they aren't the same story...and Kristen Proby has this talent. It makes me not only look forward to the next book, but get excited when the next one appears on my Kindle.

The relationship with Kat and Mac was spot on, it was perfect, and you felt it. It was emotionally gripping, you were drawn in, and you wanted them to work.

I loved the ending and how the situation was handled...there was the obvious direction this could have gone, but it didn't and I love that about Kristen Proby's writing...that she doesn't always go in the obvious direction...it keeps the book fresh and compelling. Without giving it away, there is nothing I can say about it here...but I can say read it!

I definitely recommend this book!

“You’re going to have a great time.” She hugs me close. “There are lots of signs and people to ask if you get lost in there, but it’s not a big airport, so you should be fine. Call me when you get there.”

“If I get there,” I say and sigh deeply. “Why do I feel like I’m never going to see you again?”

“Because you’re being dramatic,” she replies and smiles brightly. “Have fun!”

And with that, she waves and drives away and I’m left alone to figure out this airport hell.

But Riley was right. Checking in and dropping my bag off is easy. Finding security is easy.

Getting frisked by the TSA guy would have been more fun if he’d looked like Charlie Hunnam, but then again, everything would be more fun with Charlie.

I follow the signs, find my gate, and am pleasantly surprised to find a bar directly across from it.

There is a god.

But once at the bar, I’m just too nervous to drink.

That’s a first.

Who in the hell gets too nervous to drink? This girl, apparently.

So I wander back to the gate and pace, dragging my small black hard-sided suitcase with red cherries on it behind me. People glance my way, but I ignore them. I’m used to it. You don’t dress the way I do, covered in sleeve tattoos, and not get looks.

Finally, my flight is called and they begin boarding. Before I know it, I’m sitting on the plane, three rows from the front—if I’m going to die, it’s going to be in first class—in the aisle seat.

“Hello,” the man next to me says. I glance his way, taking in his light brown hair and green eyes, and if we were anywhere but here, I would totally flirt with him.

But we’re on a motherfucking airplane.

“Hi,” I reply and swallow hard. The flight attendant asks us if we’d like anything to drink before we take off, but I shake my head no and stare at the pilot sitting in the cock pit. “Don’t they close that door?”

“Right before we take off,” my travel companion says. I’m surprised that I spoke aloud. “Hey, are you okay?”

“Fine.”

He’s silent for a moment and I keep staring at the pilot. I want to march up there and tell him to make sure that we get there in one piece. What are his credentials, anyway? I want to see his license, and a few letters of recommendation wouldn’t hurt either.

“I’m Mac.” I slide my eyes to him and nod, then whip my gaze back to the front.

“Kat.”

FACE THE FLAMES BY JO DAVIS-ARC REVIEW

The author of "Bring the Heat "returns to Sugarland, where a firefighter from Station Five will face the dangers in risking his heart...

A near-fatal accident left firefighter/paramedic Clay Montana with devastating injuries. Now, after a year-long recovery, Clay is focused on one thing: getting his body back to form, so he can return to the job he loves. And then a chance meeting with a fiery redhead changes his life...

Detective Melissa Ryan may be the new cop on the block, but she s no stranger to Sugarland. It s where she lived with her violent, criminal uncle a man she needs to see behind bars. But when she meets Clay at a crime scene, the down-but-far-from-out firefighter makes her rethink her priorities.

Getting close to Clay is intoxicating, but Melissa must keep her wits about her if she s to protect them from a man with deadly intentions.

I enjoyed a lot about this story.  I particularly liked that when we initially meet Clay (aside from the prologue), he is not at his best physically, but is recovering from an injury that was sustained on the job.  This is an interesting twist to a firefighter story, as usually they are the macho heroes with no weakness.  I liked the difference.

I liked that Melissa was a police officer.  That they were on equal footing when it came to being in public service, but that she was recognized as being capable of doing her job.  There was some mention of the idea of women in traditionally male roles, but it was definitely not the focus, which I also liked.

The evolution of the relationship between Clay and Melissa felt authentic and I believed it.  I thought they acted as people who were in a relationship that is just beginning, and who are a little reluctant to get involved due to where they each are in their lives and the things they are facing.

I liked going along for the ride, so to speak, with Clay as he worked to get his position back with his team (no spoilers on how that goes) and I thought the resolution was handled fairly well.

I thought there was, at least in my opinion, a little too much time and focus on the secondary characters and while it did enhance the story, I also thought it pulled away, a little, from the central narrative.  But not enough for me to say I didn't like the story.  I did.

I recommend this book.

BEAUTIFUL MESS BY KASEY LANE-RELEASE BLITZ

Title: Beautiful Mess
Series: Rock ‘n’ Ink #2
Author: Kasey Lane
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Release Date: March 7, 2017

Blurb

When attorney Jami Dillon strides into the conference room to meet her new client, she's stopped in her tracks by an all-too familiar figure. Jackson Paige. He's her tall, tattooed, and sexy as hell hook up from law school-who also broke her heart.

Hell's bells.
Jackson Paige was, in fact, Jax Pain, the drummer of Manix Curse.
That thing in Jami's chest tightened, making it hard to breathe.

Jackson Paige, aka Jax Pain, has worked hard to put that unfor-frickin-gettable fling behind him and the nasty secret that made him leave her. Truth is, life as the playboy drummer of Portland's hottest metal band hasn't helped him to forget the fiery, sexy woman who stole his heart. Lucky for him, Jami was just hired as his band's new attorney. But when he sees the look on her face when she realizes who her new client is, Jax wonders if maybe being this close to her again isn't such a great idea. The explosive chemistry is there, but so are the dark secrets...

I went into Beautiful Mess knowing that it was the second book in a series without having read the first.  I wanted to read this one because I love second chance romances and I have a weakness for books with musicians.  I did struggle in the beginning to connect with the book but overall enjoyed it.

I believed in the chemistry between these two characters-both currently and their previous fling.   It took me a bit to get there but once I did, I was all for them. Jami definitely had her share of issues to overcome, and at times they may have appeared to be repetitive but I didn't hate that.  Not everyone learns things the first go around right? It's human nature to stumble back over the same things a few times before overcoming them so I didn't mind that about her at all.

The secondary characters in the book are fun without being overwhelming, and definitely intrigue me enough to make me want to try this author's other work. The path for this second chance romance wasn't smooth sailing, but I didn't mind the work put into them.  I will say that the book started slow and had some pacing issues, but overall I did enjoy it.
