Synopsis

A high school reunion is about to get down and dirty and a whole lot more complicated in this new romance from USA Today bestselling author Avery Flynn.
Brains and a badass attitude. That’s all troublemaker Leah Camacho took with her when she left Catfish Creek. She’d promised herself she’d never go back, but when the invite to her tenth high school reunion arrived along with the chance to show everyone who doubted her what a success she’s made of herself, she couldn’t resist. However, when she discovers a 15-carat, stolen diamond in her rental car’s glove box, there’s only one man she can turn to for help—the same sexy, stubborn domineering man who’d smashed her heart all those years ago.
Sheriff Drew Jackson knew a long time ago that Leah Camacho was nothing but trouble and has sworn to never get caught up in her again—no matter how damn sexy she is or how badly he’d failed to forget her. But, when the woman who test drove his heart right into a concrete wall rolls into Catfish Creek with some serious bad guys on her tail, it’s up to him to keep her safe—even if that means guarding her hot bod 24/7 without giving into temptation or losing his mind.

I'm a sucker for second chance romances so when I saw the blurb for Trouble I knew I wanted to give this book a try. It had a second chance tied into a high school reunion-so I expected some residual high school drama and feelings as well. This book was a fast read for me and I did enjoy it. To me, it delivered a good punch.

I liked Leah. I think she's a very relatable character. It isn't often you see the heroine as the original heartbreaker, or in this case troublemaker, so I thought that was a unique twist for these characters. I liked her attitude, her smarts. She was a lot of fun for me.

Drew-Drew was HOT. Former boy scout turned sheriff, this "good" boy has turned into quite the hot man. It's always fun to see people who follow such rigid lines of good vs. bad be shaken and tempted by the other side-and Leah definitely tempts Drew.

These two have a chemistry that never went away. You can see it in their words, you can feel it in their actions. The sexy times between them were definitely hot and I loved them. Watching these two come back together under these circumstances was fun for me.

So this is a romance that has a nice side of suspense. I thought the suspense added to the romance, which is how I like my suspense in books to be honest, and that it was well thought out. It kept my interest in the book, whereas sometimes suspense becomes so over the top or so predictable that I lose interest in the story.

If you're looking for a good second chance with heat and some suspense, give this book a try. This is a standalone book but is the second in a series. I enjoyed it enough to go back to check out the first and look forward to what this author comes up with next. I recommend this book.

Spinning the wheel as he hit the brakes, he came to a stop behind the sports car at an angle that blocked it from reversing. Drew got out of his truck, keeping the open door between him and the other car and flicked open the leather strap on his hip holster that kept his sheriff's office-issued 9mm locked in place. "Get out of the vehicle," he hollered. The car's driver's side door opened wide. The first part of the driver to appear was one shapely leg wearing skin-tight denim punctuated with scuffed up black Doc Martens. Some sort of danger alarm sounded in Drew's head, but not the kind that warned of bullets or other bodily danger. A woman got out, facing away from him, her hands up and her dark hair a long silky curtain that led his attention straight down her back to the high curve of her ass poured into those jeans. Parts of him that had no place in police business sat up and noticed. Her ass was a testament to the reason why society required women to wear full dresses for so long—because men were weak, lust-addled idiots when it came to asses like the one that looked more than a little familiar to Drew. His gaze snapped back up as his internal alarm went from quiet buzz to all-out blare. He knew that ass, that hair, and those damn boots. "Turn around," he ordered. She did. Her lush mouth—one he knew far too well—was compressed into a tight line, her attention focused on something behind him. Leah Camacho was back and with her always came trouble—for him, for his sanity, and for the part of him that still thought of her at opportune moments in the shower. "Drew," she said, making his name sound like a curse and a promise. "Get on the other side of the door." Listening to Leah Camacho was the last thing he should be doing, but he did it anyway for reasons he didn't understand. Just as he rounded the door, an extended cab pickup truck turned the corner. The tires were big, the windows dark, and the speed was slow. As it puttered by, Drew looked it over and mentally confirmed it didn't belong to any of the usual suspects in Catfish Creek. Of course, the high school reunion was bringing in lots of folks who hadn't been here in a while. At the corner, the truck sped up, peeling away from the stop sign and taking a hard right back toward the highway. "Who was that?" he asked, the smell of burnt rubber drifting back toward them. "No fucking clue but they've been on my ass for the past hour," she said, reaching up and winding her long hair into a knot on the top of her head—the move emphasizing her amazing tits and making Drew's mouth go dry. "I didn't realize I'd be stopping on your turf." He bet not. After what happened last time they were together, she'd made avoiding him into an art form. However, the fact that he was the law in town, however temporarily, meant avoiding her was an impossibility because wherever Leah Camacho went, trouble was sure to follow. He glanced down at exhibit A. "What happened to your tire?" he asked. "No clue," she said, her voice tight with a lie. "I must have run over something." Drew squatted down and took a closer look at the tire. It didn't have a tear, it was just gone as if it had been a blow out. If Leah had run over something big enough to do that, she would have realized it. "What in the hell is going on, Leah?"

SHATTERED KING BY SHERILEE GRAY-REVIEW

He’s after the woman who helped put him behind bars. She’s been in hiding for three years raising the son he doesn’t know about.

Holding a grudge has never felt so good.

Shattered King is an intense, ultra-sexy standalone novel set in the world of the Lawless Kings. Sherilee Gray’s raw, hard, beautiful, deeply-emotional voice will leave you breathless long after the last page.

“Shattered King is a sexy, beautiful second chance love story... a truly enjoyable read.” - Sawyer Bennett, New York Times bestselling author
"Raw, gritty, and full of supercharged sexual tension...SHATTERED KING will break you into pieces right before it stitches you back together again." -Diana Gardin, author of SWORN TO PROTECT, Rescue OP's Series

I like books where there is some tension between the main characters.  Not all the time, as they can get heavy, but they can be fun.

I loved the beginning of this book, and there are some great angry hurt (and angry sex) scenes and you definitely start to feel how Lulu and Hunter felt about one another, and how much splitting up left an emotional scar for both of them.

The end of the book is also interesting, and strong.  I wanted a little more from the reveal of the child being his, and I thought the whole step-father thing was a little unnecessary.  I also thought, for someone who held enough of a grudge to kidnap Lulu and chain her in the bathroom of a cabin, that he reacted a little unemotionally to the revelation that she had a child.

I thought the middle of the book was a little unbalanced with the rest of the story, and there was a lot of time spent on the build up of their physical attraction.  Don't get me wrong, they are on point in that area, and the sex was scorching...but as this is a second chance romance in which Lulu was not only responsible for Hunter going to jail, but also has his child and didn't tell him, I wanted more intensity.

The parts of this book that worked, worked very well.  For me, there were just some parts of this that didn't work as well and messed up a little bit of the balance of the book.  Not enough for me to be unable to recommend the book, but enough for me to say that there were places that I wanted a little more than I got from this.

I recommend this book overall.

PROTECTING HIS INTERESTS BY SUZANNE ROCK-REVIEW

What if the roles in the movie Pretty Woman got switched?

After spending months undercover at a high-end escort service, Special Agent Gabriel Ferreira hits a dead end in his case. Then a gorgeous art restorer picks him as her date, and his luck changes in more ways than one.

Gabe won’t let Scarlett Bishop come between him and his goal of taking down Miami’s newest serial killer, no matter how great she is in bed. Unfortunately, the more he tries to distance himself from the sexy redhead, the more tangled up she becomes in his investigation. Now she has a target on her back, and he must figure out her connection to the killer and keep her safe at the same time. Every second he spends with the sarcastic beauty, he becomes more infatuated. Now if only he can keep his hands off of Scarlett’s gorgeous body and concentrate on his mission before they both become pawns in the killer’s dangerous game.

This was a little different than I was expecting from the blurb.  I enjoyed it, but I am not sure if I was totally on board with the idea that someone would order an escort, who happened to be an ex, to accompany her to a major event.  I think, for me, I would like to believe that a woman can be successful even if she doesn't have a date.  That said, it did work for the plot of the book and it was only their initial meeting that was a result of this, so I was mostly able to let this go.

I enjoyed this overall.  There were places I thought the pacing was a little unsteady and there were parts where I felt that it skipped a bit, but I enjoyed it overall.  And, in the areas where I thought it seemed a little fast, I can tell what the author was doing, and I think it was intentional.

I enjoyed this title overall, and I do recommend it.

Synopsis

Micah Preston is Hollywood’s #1 sex symbol.
A rich and famous actor who has sworn off any serious relationships, the playboy is the media’s favorite bachelor.
But he wasn’t anybody when Maddie Bauer met him seven years ago. Then he was just the hot guy at the party who gave her an amazing orgasm and never called her again.
Now her job as a camera assistant has landed her on the set of his latest movie, and despite her vow to ignore his charm, she finds him pulling her focus.
She just has to make it through the shoot without landing in his bed. But when the legendary bad boy sets his sights on her, how can she possibly resist?
The book was previously published under the title Take Two.

Laurelin Paige is a favorite of mine for the stories she tells, the way she writes them, and for how much I enjoy reading her words. And, the hot sex. The really hot sex. That’s another reason. Maybe the first reason? There’s a scene on the wall of a trailer that I am still recovering from.

Second chance romance is a favorite of mine. I love the intensity of the connection when there is a history, but also the intensity of the fear of losing the person (or the chance at something more) again.

As this is a second chance romance by Laurelin Paige, it's no surprise I loved this book. It is important to mention here that if she ever writes a book I don’t love, I will be honest…but this definitely isn’t that book.

Micah and Maddie get their second chance, and it's one neither of them expected or particularly pursued, which I really liked. Each of them moved on, pursued their dreams, handled disappointment, and became the people they are now, at their second meeting.

It’s a slightly different second chance, as it was more a hot interlude that could have gone somewhere, but as you do when you are young, you put the wrong things as a priority. Micah did this, allowing his career to be more important than the connection he found in a secluded corner of a garden with Maddie.

Micah followed advice he was given to stay single, and this is a hard habit to change because it worked.
He has all that he wanted, and he got where he wanted to be, by following advice that led him to think the secret was being single. Add in a few times where people have wanted to be with Micah the celebrity instead of Micah the man, and you get Micah as he is now, the sex symbol who uses one night stands to meet his needs for companionship because he is afraid of wanting more.

His journey in the book, in my opinion, is a little deeper than Maddie’s, as in order to be with Maddie, Micah needs to unlearn some behaviors that he believes not only protect him, but that allowed him to get where he is with his career. His mother, in a misguided attempt to be supportive, helps reinforce this belief. But, she is not being harsh, rather she is supporting what her son believes to be the reason for his success.

At the beginning of this book, they are the couple who meet again after years, after circumstances stopped them right at the start of something with real potential. Or did it? Would they have worked? Would they have been that couple who stayed together forever if things had been different years ago? While each reader can decide this on their own, the answer for me is no, they wouldn't have worked. Micah still had his dream, and the direction he wanted to go with his life, and I think they would have ended up exactly where they are now, only with more baggage.

What's interesting is that seven years ago, neither of them knew anything about the other, and the attraction was explosive. Now, both have reason to doubt the other. Maddie has been treated badly and hurt, and so has Micah. Pretending not to recognize one another seems smart... because if they don't have any idea who the other is, then there's no pressure to not mess up this second chance, no doubt that not getting together years ago was the right decision, and no reason to face their fears of being together.
Sometimes, it's easier when you have someone else to blame for a missed opportunity. Someone who didn't recognize it, or you, is at fault.

However, when you have chemistry like Maddie and Micah, and an author as wonderful and talented as Laurelin Paige, you aren't going to be able to hide what is right in front of you for long.

The second chance, for me to believe in it, has to convince me that the reason it didn't work last time is no longer an issue and will no longer stop them from being together. Well done, as always, Ms. Paige, as I believed in their second chance. I think Micah is stronger now, and has learned what is really important in life, and what he is and is not willing to give up along the way.

Maddie and Micah fail dramatically in staying away from one another, and it’s a hot, sexy, swoony ride watching two people realize that risking your heart is worth it when you trust the other person, and that the compromise to stay together isn't the cost of the relationship, but the reward.

This is a reissue of a book that has been re-edited/updated and given a lovely new cover. I'm not able to say for certain what is different, as I somehow hadn't read it when it was originally released. (HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?!?!?) But I can tell you what it has; a well written narrative, characters you adore, sexy times that will make you swoon, a hero you fall in love with even more for his flaws, and chapstick.

Bet you want me to explain the chapstick. Nope, for that, you'll have to read the book.

I recommend this title.

Second chance romances are a favorite of mine. I love the idea of a couple reconnecting and getting a chance to right a past wrong, a chance to see if the time for them is right NOW when maybe it wasn't before. Sex Symbol is the perfect example of a fantastic second chance romance. It's full of sexiness, fantastic chemistry, and fabulous lead characters.

I love Laurelin Paige. She takes simple concepts and makes them complex. She adds that what if element, the one that keeps the reader guessing. I was wondering the whole book, in the back of my mind, what would have happened if Micah had called Maddie all those years ago? That question kept me turning the page, waiting for a resolution. It was completely worth it.

I loved Maddie. I understood her and her reluctance to get involved with Micah again at all. I wanted her to achieve her dreams for herself, to not put herself on the back burner. So I enjoyed watching her grow through this book. I feel like she was on a journey and once she reconnected with Micah, things just took off for her at warp speed. She struggled to balance her personal life and her professional dreams/aspirations and I think many people can relate to that.

Micah, holy sexiness, Micah. He was just HOT. Along with being hot, he had his fair share of issues. He took some advice early on that wasn't necessarily the best though I understand why he followed the advice. That advice gave him a reputation, one he happily kept up with, but it didn't fulfill him. He didn't realize that until he reconnected with Maddie, but even then he struggled. Watching him navigate this struggle was fantastic. His growth through the book had me cheering at the end.

There is NO denying the chemistry between them. I swear my kindle melted. There's one particular scene that still has me fanning myself days later. But sex wasn't enough for this couple, even as hot as it was, and seeing them realize that was beautiful.

Laurelin Paige has another hit on her hands with Sex Symbol. It's a fabulous second chance, full of sexiness and heart. I truly enjoyed it and would recommend it.

KEEPING HER CLOSE BY SUZANNE ROCK-REVIEW

As the newest SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team member, Officer Maximo "Max" Ferreira is irritated that his first assignment is not diffusing a terrorist threat, but instead providing protection to the controversial blogger Tess Abbott during her lecture tour in New York City. He believes the job is nothing more than glorified babysitting but after one look at the sexy journalist, suddenly, his job is no longer a hardship.

The attraction between them is immediate, and Tess's take-charge personality in the bedroom is like a dream come true. Unfortunately, Tess is too wrapped up in her work to take their relationship seriously. When an attempt is made on her life, it will take all of Max's training to convince her to stop trying to handle everything on her own and stay where he can protect her best--in his arms.

I am not sure why now, but at the beginning I was not sure if I was going to finish this book, there was something about Tess who really rubbed me wrong and I had a really hard time relating to her. But, I liked the first book by this author, so I kept on. And, I did enjoy it overall.

I like the relationship between Max and Tess, I liked the idea that he wanted to be so protective while she wanted to be able to take care of herself. I also liked that the heroine was strong, that she was capable, and that you like her. It was funny, actually, that the character I did not like at the beginning was the one I really connected with at the end.

The pacing was good overall, but the end seemed to move a little more quickly than the beginning, although this might be related to the fact that I liked the heroine more by the end.

Overall, I did enjoy this title and I do recommend it.
