A best friends-to-lovers stand-alone romance from NYT Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson
Evan Bryant wasn't your typical hero.
But he was mine.
Broken by the worlds’ standards, he was still the strongest boy I would ever know.
My best friend. The boy I’d given everything to. My heart, my body, and the promise of forever.
The day I’d needed him most, he walked away.
He left me shattered and questioning the love I’d thought we’d shared.
Three years later, I wasn’t prepared for him to return to Gingham Lakes.
It wouldn’t have mattered if he wasn’t the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.
My fingers still would have ached to caress his skin.
My body still would have begged to get lost in his touch.
And my heart . . . it would have always sung his name.
But time changes things. With it, secrets that could ruin everything.
Can we find a way to love again, or have the fears of our past stolen the hope of our forever...
I was thrilled when I discovered that this was Evan's story. I loved him as the kid in his mom's story, and to be the hero in his own was perfect and I was so happy to get his story.
Frankie and Evan were friends as children, and then they were more...and then they just....weren't.
While there is some history told, the bulk of this story is in the present, in the relationship that Evan has now as he returns to his hometown after a few years.
Honestly, as this is a story about people you have met before, telling anything else feels a little like giving the plot away. There are things that you know about Evan, if you read his mom's story and these things might be a bit of a surprise if you don't know his story.
Now, about what I consider spoilers....if it's in the blurb, or literally noted in the author's note before the story, talking about it in the review isn't a spoiler. So, I want to talk a little bit about the fact that Evan is deaf. He's not the "traditional" hero of a romance, and I loved that. I loved that he is not perfect in the way that so many characters in romance novels are, and I loved that this made him feel more, not less, accessible. I am not going to get into details on the plot and the ways in which his being deaf altered the story, or the ways in which it mattered, but I will say it...is a part of him and it really doesn't matter. You fall in love with him right along with Frankie.
I enjoyed and recommend this title.
