I adored Arden. She's so smart, yet adorkably clueless at times. I loved her she attempted to get out of her comfort zone and discover more of herself; and who better to do that with than your best guy friend? As a side note, she also has one of the coolest jobs I've ever read about. Arden is a character I could absolutely be friends with in real life; I really loved getting to know her.
Gabe is so much more than a pretty face in a fireman's uniform. This man is smart, sweet, sexy and so kind. He, like most men, is a little clueless too. Watching him with his Pops was one of the sweetest things I've read in a book. On the flip side, watching him try to get out of the friend zone with Arden was one of the hottest things I've read. Gabe's the total package and a fabulous book boyfriend.
For a friends to lovers book to work for me I have to believe that two are actually friends, not just acquaintances but friends. There is no doubt of that here. They have a wonderful friendship and watching it heat up and become more was so satisfying. The spark between these two is so palpable that there were some moments I thought I'd need a fire extinguisher for my kindle!
I loved the supporting characters here. Something this Author does, and that I love, is allows glimpses into past characters/books. This is a standalone, yes, but for a fan to read and see a connection to a previous book? Well, it never fails to make me smile. I will say that I hands down loved Pops. I won't spoil anything, but the relationship between Gabe and Pops is really something special and had me tearing up a bit.
The pacing worked perfectly here. The banter is so sharp and witty that you can't help but smile and laugh along. The book is set in a location I'm not at all familiar with but I could picture completely through the descriptions in this book.
Lauren Blakely surely has another hit on her hands with Best Laid Plans. This book is a fabulously sweet, sexy, funny and hot friends to lovers story that I know I'll read again and again. I absolutely LOVED it and highly recommend it.
Wait. Weren't those the ones you were thinking of? Sorry, my bad. But, I promise, those are the important words. (Oh, and get your mind out of the gutter, that's later is this slow burn, steamy romance.)
In all seriousness, I loved this book. Gabe and Arden are adorable and, well, they meet during the commission of a crime against cheese. Yes, this is a crime...trust me. But it also sets the tone for this story which is one of a fun, flirty, best friends to lovers that will have you smiling the entire time.
It wasn't in the plan, as far as either of them knew, to fall for one another. And, as often is the case, they are the last ones to admit to themselves what everyone around them can clearly see. They are meant to be.
And, the path to the realization for them is perfection. There wasn't a single misstep along the way, and the construction of the plot and the characters is done with precision. Perfect, like I said above.
I also really enjoyed the introductions of the other characters who are destined to get their own books. If I have a criticism of first in the series titles, it's often that so much time is spent with character intro that you lose the story. Not even the slightest problem here.
Bottom line? I adored, enjoyed and recommend this book. Wait for it...I was charmed. (Did you really think I'd let that "C" word slip by??)
