Mackenzie made me smile. I love her thirst for knowledge, her devotion to her son and her attitude in general. I appreciated her caution but loved seeing her let her guard down, even when she thought she wasn't. I would absolutely be on a trivia team or take in a Broadway show with her; she's the type of character I could easily be friends with.
Campbell is one of my favorite Lauren Blakely book boyfriends. I have a running list of them and Campbell may have knocked someone out of the top five...but I won't name names. Campbell just is so insanely sexy-and has epic dirty talking skills- but has this sweet side that just killed me. He's definitely the total package in my book. Strong, sexy, sweet, smart and did I mention he's a musician? I would definitely be a groupie for his band!
These two just click together from the moment their eyes meet. I loved every moment of them together. Their first kiss totally set the tone for me (I'm telling you, nobody writes first kisses like this author) and I just buckled in and enjoyed the ride. The sexy times in this book were some of the steamiest and sexiest that I've read in a long time. I truly thought my kindle would melt-they were that hot. But they were so much more than epic sex. Their connection outside the bedroom was just as believable and fun to read about.
The supporting cast of characters in this book were an absolute blast. They didn't overshadow Mackenzie and Campbell at all but they added to the story in such a fun way. I'd love to hang out with Jamison for a day! There are books where you feel like you can just jump in and join the characters, live in their world for a bit. Once Upon a Real Good Time was one of those books for me. I could happily live among these characters. There were some Easter eggs in this book that definitely had me smiling as well.
I didn't want this book to end. I thought it was a clever, fun and unique storyline. The writing was sharp and the pacing flowed just perfectly. I laughed, swooned and had to fan myself repeatedly throughout the book. Once Upon a Real Good Time definitely lives up to its name as this book definitely provided me with a really good time. I can't wait for the next book in this series! I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it.
Sometimes life is about finding your balance, and sometimes it's about realizing it's just a little off. It's about keeping your balance when the path you are on dips and takes an unexpected turn.
Through circumstances not entirely of their own choosing, Mackenzie and Campbell both make major life decisions because life went in a way they weren't expecting. Life happens that way, to all of us, and they figured out a way to change their lives and find balance. While they don't regret it, necessarily, both are aware that there were sacrifices.
At the time, their decisions, and changing their entire lives for their children, were the right choice. But, as life does over time, things change, and this stops being the clear cut, always correct choice.
What happens when making the right choice, the same one you have been making for years, to put your children above all else, is actually the wrong choice...all of a sudden?
That's where Mackenzie and Campbell find themselves in this story. A couple of parents with children who are growing up, and finding their wings, and maybe don't need to be as protected as they once did. How, though, do you make that change? To live for yourself and not your child? Sometimes, a choice is made because life hands you something you will lose if you don't make the right choice.
It's a tough life moment. And it's one that Lauren Blakely very skillfully tells in this story. There are little bread crumbs, little moments where the parents realize the kids will be ok...and the reader is there for them. The story is so precisely crafted that you find yourself agreeing with Mackenzie and Camobell at the beginning, that they can't be together. But by the end, you agree with their kids...that they absolutely should be.
But, don't worry. This isn't just a story about parents falling in love. Oh no. It's part of the story...but this one is also the kind of dirty hot that sets Kindles on fire. Campbell is a dirty talker. In person. On the phone. Via text. Mackenzie is learning just how much that works for her...in foyers, on phone dates, and in coffee shops.
This just might be the hottest book Lauren Blakely has ever written. Or maybe it isn't. Ask Samantha. (Read the book, this will make sense, I promise.)

She nibbles on the corner of her lips. “My friend Roxy thinks I should—”
“—let yourself have a good time for one more night?”
“How did you know?”
“She seemed like a good wingwoman.” I reach for a strand of her hair, running my finger across the soft locks, cataloging her reaction. “Want to know what I’m thinking?”
She nods.
I flash her a wicked grin. “I’m wondering if you want to be kissed by someone who’s been wanting to kiss you all night long.”
A flash of hesitation crosses her face, then she raises her eyes as if she’s thinking.
“I do,” she whispers, and the few seconds of reticence make her answer even sweeter.
I thread a hand through her hair. I’m going to take my time working up to a kiss, to make sure she wants it desperately. “I’ve been thinking about running my hands through this hair.”
“You have nice fingers…”
“Were you watching my hands when I was on stage?”
Her voice is soft and feathery, a quiet little confession. “Yes. I like the way you play.”
“What did you like about it?” I curl my hand tighter around her head. I swear, heat is radiating off her body, and it’s so damn enticing. “Did it make you think of anything?”
She nibbles on the corner of her lips. “Made me thing about how you might play…me.”
A groan works its way up my chest. She is an alluring mix of daring lioness and clumsy puppy. I yank her flush to me, bringing her mouth mere inches away from mine. “I’d like to play your body like a guitar. I’d like to make you sing, make you cry out in pleasure.” I run both hands through her soft hair, tugging her head back.
She gasps, and that’s my cue to lick a path up her neck, where I nibble on her jaw till she’s squirming against me. “Did you think about how I might kiss you when you watched me play?”
A sexy little sigh seems to escape her lips, followed by a yes.
“I noticed you the other week. At your booth, doing your quiz. Couldn’t stop looking at you. You were so sexy and adorable, and now you’re so damn close to me all I want is to turn you on.”
