MAN CANDY BY JESSICA LEMMON - ARC REVIEWS

Dax: After spending the summer buried up to my eyeballs in my family’s affairs, I’m ready for a break. The kind of break where I can spend two solid weeks camping and fishing in the company of absolutely no one. Then I find myself directly in the path of a drop-dead gorgeous tornado by the name of Becca Stone. Who can resist a night with a damsel in distress? Especially when she happens to be a leggy blonde? The last thing I expect is for Becca to show up on my cabin doorstep the next night, shivering in the rain and ready for seconds.
Becca: One minute I’m admiring the rock-hard jaw of the Magic Mike lookalike who walks into my bar, and the next I’m getting fired by my own brother. Loudly. In front of everyone. Luckily Dax Vaughn is a gentleman who aims his white-hot smile at me. Oh, it’s on. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. Then a torrential storm washes out the main road and causes a massive power outage, giving us two whole weeks to enjoy each other’s company. At which point Dax will go back home, leaving “us” in the rearview mirror. That’s the plan. Or it was . . . until I started falling for him.

I enjoy Jessica Lemmon's books. She has a knack for writing relationships and scenarios that are believable and have you invested in them from start to finish. Man Candy is a great example of that. It's hot, steamy and was fun to read.

I got Becca right from the start. I liked her. She was fun and someone I could see myself hanging out with and someone I would support and go to bat for. I loved her reaction to Dax, that immediate pull. I was rooting for her throughout the book.

Dax wasn't someone new to me as I've read the other books in this series. However, if you haven't read Jessica Lemmon before (why haven't you??) this is a great book to start with. What I loved most about Dax was how he pushed Becca and his confidence in her. It was really a side to him I didn't fully expect.

These two have sparks flying from the start. It was fun to watch how they progressed together. The sex was hot and steamy, but there was more to them and they certainly weren't expecting that from each other. I loved the growth of their relationship-and the ending was sweet.

Jessica Lemmon's writing just flows. The pacing works and the story is spun so that it seems new and fresh. I believed how this story played out. Again, this is the third book in this series bu tit can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone. I read this book in one sitting simply because I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Forced proximity books are fun. The idea that 2 people who would not have been attracted to one another (or who would have been possibly attracted but not acted on it) are put into a situation where they are not able to ignore one another, well, this appeals to me.

Dax and Becca are attracted to one another. He is a guest at the wilderness retreat hotel where Becca works. He is supposed to be in one of the cabins that is far away, and is planning to be camping...so they should not have any time with one another. But, life (and nature) intervene and we get a really hot romance.

I love the characters Jessica Lemmon writes. How real and compelling they are, and how much they seem like the kind of people you would want to know. This makes them easy to read about, and makes them characters it is easy to invest in. And, how fun this is.

The romance is hot, the sex is steamy, the characters are at time funny and charming. Becca's brother is frustrating, her family bond interesting, her relationship with her coworkers adds depth without overshadowing the Dax and Becca romance.

This book is a part of the "Real Love" series...and that is how it feels. You think they will be ok, that they will work out in the long run. And, this is hard. You need tension and conflict in order for the story to be interesting. Too much tension and you doubt that you are reading about a couple who is in it for the long haul...not enough, and you feel like you are reading about 2 characters who are not invested in the relationship. The balance in this title is excellent and the story is enjoyable.

I recommend this book.

SOMETHING SO IRRESISTIBLE BY NATASHA MADISON - RELEASE BLITZ

Max Horton

They call me an outcast like it's a bad thing.
An asshole byproduct of a shitty upbringing. I don't care about anything except myself and my little sister.
I will always protect what’s mine.
With one year left on my hockey contract I'm keeping my head down and my eyes on the goal.
A collision, with her, changes my entire existence.

Allison Grant

Never fall in love with a sports star. That's what my stepfather always said. He told me athletes are complicated and moody—that the higher their paycheck, the lower their morals.
As public relations for the New York Stingers I know exactly what he means, but I can’t seem to say no to a friendship with one beautiful, damaged man.
What started out as hate turned into something else.
We tried to stay away, to keep our distance, but the pull was too strong.
Something forbidden turned into something so irresistible.

I was anticipating this book since finishing the second in the series-and boy did this not disappoint! This book was just so smartly done that once I started reading I couldn't stop. I just HAD to see what was going to happen with these characters. This book was fun, smart, sexy and hot.

I loved Allison. She was smart and had SUCH determination. I admired that about her. She wasn't going to let anyone hold her back from doing her job to the best of her abilities. She stood up for herself, she wasn't afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. She's in an interesting position with her job and her family-which I won't spoil for you.

Max, oh Max. He's an ass-or so you think. Did he do some things he shouldn't have? Yes-but I'm not going to spoil any of that. He redeems himself so spectacularly. I loved seeing him grow, seeing him show his softer side. He's whip smart, truly. And he has a heart that's just so big but has been bruised in the past. I just cannot say how much I grew to love him.

The sparks between these two are hot and fly immediately-though neither of them want them to be there. The progress of their relationship from enemies, to friends, to lovers was just beautifully done. It felt authentic. I could 100% believe in how the whole situation played out. They are, hands down, my favorite Natasha Madison couple to date.

The pacing of this book was perfection. The writing flowed spectacularly. The banter, the flirting, the friendship and the love. It was all there and just so brilliantly portrayed.

If you haven't read the previous two books in this series you can absolutely start here-but there will be spoilers for the other books as the characters do overlap. But I loved this book. It's one I will go back and read again and is honestly one of my favorite books that I've recently read. I highly recommend this book!

Max and Allison have a complicated past, and definitely one that makes it easier to be enemies than it does to be friends. The details of this past are actually a spoiler to another book, so I am not going to say much about that here, just in case you are reading this before the other books in the series. They are standalone, but there are spoilers.

Natahsa Madison writes a lot of the friends to lovers trope, and it works...but it works particularly well in this title. Often, the hero and the heroine in her stories devolve into fights that involve penis balloons and itching powder...and while these are funny, they also detract a little from the intensity of the story. And, while I am in the minority, sometimes I think they go a little farther than I am totally comfortable with in a romance, if that makes sense. Not enough for me to not read the next title (obviously) and not enough to make me dislike the author, but a little farther than I like.

In this story, Max and Allison don't like one another. But, they are really no games, or attempts to make the other look bad. But, they are both difficult to one another, in the way that you are when you are not comfortable around someone, and in the way that allows the reader to realize there is emotion there under the dislike.

Allison is the reminder for Max of a past misdeed, of something that he knew was a bad idea at the time and has come to regret more and more as time goes on. Allison still holds a grudge, because the thing Max did? It was big. It was life changing, it was an experience that will always stay with Allison and the people it impacted. It's not something you just walk away from when it is over.

And, most importantly, while you are able to forgive him for the mistake in his past, you understand why Allison struggles to do the same. I loved this tension. it's real, it's understandable, and it lets you relate to both of the characters at the same time. Allison is falling in love with Max, and she is struggling to move past the thing in his past...while Max is falling for her, and struggling with the same event.

I seriously can't say enough about how much this worked for me. It gave a depth to not only the enemies, but to the romance of the story, to how much they loved one another to be able to put it in the past. It moved the story well.

The writing was strong, the pacing was consistent throughout. I felt the romance, the friends, and the enemies section flowed smoothly. The dialog worked and the characters were believable.

The author told me this is her favorite story that she has ever written...and, as it is the best thing she has written to date, it is not hard to see why Ms. Madison feels this way.

I recommend this title.

DEEP BY M. MALONE AND NANA MALONE-RELEASE BLITZ

Title: Deep
Series: The Deep Duet #1
Authors: M. Malone & Nana Malone
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 8, 2018

Blurb

I am the ghost that haunts your dreams. I am a liar, a protector...a killer...I am death.

You think you know my story, but you have no idea. My death was just the beginning.

I’m a dead man.

In the years since I escaped the shadow organization that owned me, my vow to protect my family is the only thing that kept me alive.

Until I meet her.

Too bad I need the monster to protect her from the demons of her past.

Too bad she’s not that innocent.

Cliffhanger Warning: I know you want the whole story right now. But that's not how things went down. And I think you know by now when it comes to ORUS, things don't always go according to f*cking plan.

(The Deep Duet unfolds over the course of two books. Deep will be followed by Deeper, releasing on January 29th)

Diana and Rafe are interesting, and I really liked the idea of the story, that she wants him dead for killing her father, but that there is a lot more going on than initially meets the eye, and that nothing is ever simple.

I loved that we are getting Rafe's story after learning about him, and his past, a little in Noah's story.

That said, I wasn't thrilled with the way the story developed. It seemed erratic and jumpy to me, like there was so much going on, the authors weren't quite sure the direction to go with the story. It did settle out about 45% into the story, and I was really engaged from that point on.

As it says in the blurb, and in the beginning of the book, this is a cliffhanger...and it is a good one. In the best, most OMG cliff-hanger-y way.

I recommend this title and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Ovary up, bitch. This is the plan.

If she wanted her plan to work, it was going to require sacrifice, which meant getting this car down the fucking ravine and then climbing down herself. Time to put on her big-girl thong.

She gathered up her long blond hair and secured it with a ponytail holder. Time to get to work. She only had a couple of hours. She’d been following Rafe DeMarco every Tuesday for months. This was the path he’d take. It was too late for another plan. Besides she’s been setting this up for months.

She had selected the perfect spot for this. Right before the guardrail began. As an added bonus, there was a path she could use to initially climb down and a rock outcropping she could stand on to wait for him.

She’d scattered broken glass to make it look like an accident. Once the car was in neutral, she jogged around to the trunk and started to push.

Her ribs throbbed. That asshole in krav maga class had forgotten they were training and had gotten in a brutal hit. She’d have bruises for days. But it wasn’t like she could wait to heal up.

Even as the sweat popped on her brow and her body screamed, inch by inch she pushed until she finally started to get some momentum. And then managed to get car right up to the edge. With one more deep breath, she rolled the car over the edge.

The crash, boom, thud sounds echoed all through the ravine as the car tumbled front-over-end down the jagged edges of rocks. A quick glance at her watch told her she needed to haul ass. DeMarco was likely turning on to the road by now, so she didn’t have time to waste.

It was a stupid thing, but she felt a pang of hurt looking at the shiny blue paint she’d picked out, all crumpled and cracked. That was the first car she’d ever bought for herself.

She’d never had her own car before. Her father had preferred for her to be chauffeured, and her brothers had felt the same way. So she’d been excited to pick out a car on her own. And look at it now… a martyr for the cause.

“Your sacrifice will not be for nothing, young Toyota.”

The back of the car was now completely smashed and bent, so it looked like the car had skidded off the road and plunged down the embankment. She shivered. Under her coat, she only wore a thin dress, one that clung to her curves. But it was part of the plan, so she’d pushed past the mortification. It would all be worth it soon.

She clasped her forehead, rubbing at the stress ball of tension that had settled behind her eyes. Now or never.

The entire scene had been meticulously planned. With a deep breath, she scooted around the guardrail and held her breath as she started down the nearly nonexistent trail. Sand and razor-sharp rocks were more than happy to mingle with her toes and cut up her feet, but she kept moving.

The son of a bitch had better take the bait. He will. This whole plan banked on Rafe DeMarco being a decent enough human being to care about someone else potentially being hurt. Either that or curious enough to stop and see what the hell was going on.

The glass was hard to ignore. As were the random clothes she’d strewn about. She just prayed some other stray motorist didn’t decide to be a Good Samaritan. But this was an access road, rarely ever traveled.

She shoved aside the lingering feelings of doubt and concern and guilt. This man had taken everything away from her, deliberately and systematically. She was going to return the favor. And she was going to get her life back. It didn’t matter how long it took.

She shivered again when she remembered his dark eyes peering at her from behind the mask. He’d just killed her father. Two bullets in the skull. Cold. Efficient. His lips had been set in a firm, grim line.

She’d gasped from her hiding place, the fear and the shock and despair leaking through her body like a chemical spill. She still remembered the sound of his voice as he muttered a single word. “Fuck.” When he’d pulled aside the curtain, she’d been so sure he was going to kill her too. Positive he was going to murder her like he’d done her father. But he hadn’t. He’d let her live.

That was his first mistake.

Maybe he’d assumed she’d be so traumatized by the situation that she wouldn’t remember. Maybe he thought she’d be grateful he hadn’t killed her. Maybe he thought she’d forget his face, his voice, the way he made her feel.

Bad luck for him. She remembered that day in startling clarity. The day he’d turned her family upside down. Come to think of it, she needed to have a slogan for when she saw him again. Like in The Princess Bride.

“My name is Diana Vandergraff. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” She wasn’t the villain here, so she wasn’t going to have some long, drawn-out bragging speech. But he would know. She’d make sure he understood the series of events that had led to his world crumbling.

She wanted him to know.

Nana Malone

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone's love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she "borrowed" from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She's been in love with kick-butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.

THE THING ABOUT LOVE BY KIM KARR-RELEASE BOOST

Title: The Thing About Love
Author: Kim Karr
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 3, 2018

Blurb

The whole stethoscope-and-white coat thing isn’t my cup of tea.

I prefer a man with an artistic vein in his body. 9 - 5 hours. And I can definitely do without the half-lidded, sleepy bedroom eyes. (Okay, so those are kind of sexy.)

Tall, dark, and handsome doesn’t change the fact that he’s arrogant, cocky, and rude.

Not that I care, but he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with a quirky girl like me, which is why he said no.

Turns out no isn’t an option.

I have a quickie wedding to plan, and Dr. Jake Kissinger doesn’t have a choice. He looks at our situation like he’s stuck with me, but in reality, I’m stuck with him. Stuck with his pouty mouth. His long, lean body. And stuck with those loose, low riding scrub pants. (Okay, so the doctor thing is growing on me.)

When spending time together turns into more than it should, I know I’m in trouble.

He isn’t supposed to make my heart pound.

I’m not supposed to make him look twice.

And we aren’t supposed to spend the night together. (Okay, so he has more than one artistic vein in his body, and other places.)

Falling for him is definitely a mistake.

Here’s the thing…

Jake is unavailable, and I know it.

Just not in the way you might think.

I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Move the Stars by Jessica Hawkins

The highly anticipated conclusion to the Something in the Way series, a forbidden love saga.

Lake
It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. If I’d known then what I do now, would I have kept on walking? Manning was older, darker, experienced—and I’d trusted him when he said the story would only ever be about us. I’d held those words close and challenged fate, but I had lost.

A part of me is still that sixteen-year-old girl squinting up at Manning, but no matter how far I fall or high I soar, I’ll always be a bird without her bear and nothing without him.

Manning
When I close my eyes, I can no longer see her. The decisions I made were to push Lake in the right direction—away from me. But now that she’s gone, would I have made those same choices?

I’d walked away like I was supposed to. I’d kept my distance. I’d bent over backward to keep Lake pure, but she’s no longer that girl, and I don’t know if I can stay away anymore. I only know I don’t want to. She’s still everything I want and nothing I should ever have, but if anyone can move the stars, it’s her great bear in the sky.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.)

 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.

 2) A person’s undoing

 3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.
