FOREVER MINE BY ERIN NICHOLAS-RELEASE WEEK BLITZ

The second book in New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas's series about three geeky girls and the hunky guys who fall for them.

Maya Goodwin doesn't believe in holding back. Ever. As a cop, she never hesitated to throw herself into harm's way to save someone. Even after an injury on the job forces her to retire, she's not afraid to keep risking it all to get the life she wants. With a new career teaching martial arts to kids already underway, she's looking forward to the future - and taking a chance on the unbelievably hot Dr. Alex Nolan.

Maya - daring and spontaneous - is the exact opposite of what Alex always thought he wanted. But when a nine-year-old daughter he never knew existed shows up on his doorstep, Maya is the one who helps them hold it together. With love on the line, will the guy who's always played it safe be willing to take the biggest risk of all?

There are books that just get it right.  And, this one is one of them.  They tell a romance that you slide into, that feels good as you are reading it, that makes you want to turn the next page, to keep the Kindle open, to not go to sleep just yet.  I think anyone who reads a lot knows this feeling, that enjoyment of just escaping into a book, to read something that you don't want to put down.

From the beginning, Maya and Alex have chemistry.  And, the build up of this chemistry is done to perfection.  It's both a slow burn and a denial of the attraction that they each feel.

I loved that you know there is a secret, and you know what it is right away.  Although, Alex isn't telling others, the reader knows.  And, it is interesting. I think this is the first book I have read that deals with this particular thing.  I am not going to spoil it, although the author places the info in the acknowledgements at the beginning of the book, so I think it is a secret you are supposed to know.

Alex has a secret, he has limitations that he doesn't want to admit to himself.  Some of those are the expectations of others.  Erin Nicholas balances this so well, the man who actually can manage sex against a wall with the man who maybe needs to play pool and poker instead of a full contact, rough sport. Alex also seems to think that he can manage to have all of the people he loves and cares for lving around him without interacting and impacting one another, and the way this is handled is both emotional and it feels real.

Maya has a mission to get back something she had which she has lost.  She has a focus toward it that doesn't change, it doesn't stop. It moves her forward in ways that may not be the healthiest, and it stops her a lot of the time from seeing what is right in front of her.

And, because romance needs a connection between 2 people to really work, Maya and Alex understand one another. They know what it is like to be held back by something, to feel that they are not able to move forward because of something totally out of their control...and to hide behind it to the detriment of the things they are hiding from.

Oddly enough, the first one in this series really didn't work for me and I actually hesitated when I received the invitation to read this one...I am so very glad I accepted the invite and gave this series another chance.  Usually, I wouldn't put this into a review, that I wasn't that big of a fan of another book...but in this case, I am mentioning it just in case there is someone else who maybe didn't connect with the first, as it would be a shame to miss this one.

I, obviously, recommend this book.

EXCERPT:

Alex laughed. He liked Maya. The thought hit him directly in the gut.
Maya smiled brightly, and he admitted that he was intensely attracted too. Now fast attraction—that he’d experienced before. But it had been a long time since even that had happened.
“I’m Dr. Alex Nolan. I’m on staff at Boston Children’s Hospital. I’m on their website if you want to look me up.”
Maya suddenly frowned. “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that.”
“Of what?”
“Googling pediatricians and finding out who you are after the mall the other day,” Maya said.
Alex raised an eyebrow. “Wouldn’t that be a little creepy?”
“Probably,” she agreed. “Maybe that’s why I didn’t do it.”
He laughed. “Well, to further decrease the creep factor, I do have a kid,” he said. “A daughter. Charlotte. We call her Charli. She’ll be ten next month. She’s very into superheroes, GR, and swords, and I know nothing about any of that. I liked the demonstration at the mall and thought I’d come check out your studio.”
“So you’re wanting to sign her up,” Maya said with a nod. “Okay, not creepy at all.”
“Uh…” Alex knew this was going to sound strange. “Actually I want to take the class myself.”
Maya frowned. “These classes won’t teach you about superheroes exactly,” she said. “They are kind of a combination of stage fighting and martial arts and self-esteem workshops.”
“I know.” He’d been on the website. Which is how he’d found out more about the studio. And where he’d stared at Maya’s photo before going in to look up more about her on the internet. Which was how he found out that her classes had won some local awards, she’d been a brilliant cop—who had not, incidentally, been fired for beating someone up—and that she regularly blogged about superheroes and their fandom and the psychology of that fandom. He’d bookmarked her page immediately.
“And the things you do in class sounds like the perfect bonding activity for Charli and me. I’ll take the class and then go home and teach her.”
Maya looked puzzled. “Why not just bring her to class?”
“She…” He swallowed. Charli would love Maya. Hell, if she saw Maya with those pointy-weapon-things, she’d want to be Maya.
But Alex had only seen Maya twice, and he’d already witnessed her get hit with a Bo staff, punched in the ribs, and cut with some kind of sharp hand weapon. Which reminded him that she’d been bleeding.
He looked down, but the bleeding had already slowed or stopped. Which was what happened when a person with normal blood got cut. But Charli didn’t have normal blood. She didn’t bleed faster, but she would bleed longer—because of the genetic mutation he had passed on to her.
He’d told her mother that Charli should be able to try whatever she wanted. But he’d also told her he’d keep Charli safe. If Charli took classes here, he would have to fill Maya and her staff in on the hemophilia and precautions and treatment…
“She has some special needs,” he said, cringing a little as he said it, knowing that Maya might easily jump to conclusions that were not at all correct. But it didn’t matter what she thought. This was the right thing for Charli.
But Maya didn’t even blink. “Okay,” she said. “I understand. Maybe…” But she trailed off while watching him thoughtfully without completing the sentence.
“Maybe what?” he asked.
“Maybe I could teach you and your daughter a private Super You class.”
He was surprised at her offer, but more—he was tempted. Which meant he had to say no. The timing for meeting a gorgeous, intriguing woman couldn’t have been worse. “I think a class with lots of other people, especially kids, would be better.”
“Why?”
Maya was direct. He liked that. And he could return the favor. “Because you look just as good in workout pants as you do in leather.”
Her eyes widened in surprise just a beat before her smile widened. “And that’s a problem?”
“It is when I’m trying to give all of my extra time and attention to my daughter.”
She studied him for a moment. “Okay,” she finally said with a nod. “And once you see the class, if you change your mind, she’s always welcome.”
Alex relaxed. “Thanks.”
“You’re not going to feel funny taking a class with a bunch of kids?”
“I love kids,” he told her.
“What about the tights and cape?”
“Tights and cape?” Alex repeated.
“The costume,” she said with a nod.
“Thought the participants all helped create their own character,” he said, realizing she was messing with him.
“They do.”
“Well, there’s no way in hell I would create a character that would wear tights.”
Maya’s gaze wandered over him, head to toe, before she said, Too bad.”

About Hot for the Fireman:

Ex-Army Ranger Erik Grady lives for the job. So when his chief at the Boston Fire Department offers him two choices—mandated therapy for supposed PTSD or a permanent desk job at the station, he reluctantly agrees to see a shrink. Only this doctor is unlike anything he expected. Female and curved in all the right places? Check. Hotter than a four-alarm fire? Check. The kind of woman that can heat his blood in and out of bed? Check, check. And oh, yeah, he just happens to have first hand experience... Of all the men to walk into psychologist Olivia Jones' office, why did it have to be him? Her one-night stand isn't playing by the rules of just. One. Night. She’s had her heart broken in the past, and no way is she going there again. And now he's blackmailing her into three dates? Well, if that's what it takes to make him see a different therapist, fine. She can handle it. So what if the chemistry between them is combustible? She's a professional, damn it. She'll date Mr. I'm Too Sexy For My Bunker Pants. But it won’t end in the fun he expects. It’s time to see how much heat this fireman can take…

I enjoyed this book a lot. I thought the idea of her being his one night stand and then therapist was interesting. I liked the idea that the issues Erik was having with PTSD were understood by her in a way that would not be understood by someone with less experience or training.

Erik and Olivia had chemistry, from the initial meeting all the way through the dates he requests and the development of their relationship sustains this wonderful chemistry and in fact builds on it as they work to get closer.

I thought they came across as people, their reactions and motivations were real. There is a scene toward the end of the book, no spoilers, that really shows how much depth the author gave each of the characters and it is compelling.

There are some twists that are created by Erik and his coming to grips with his PTSD. I loved that he was willing to sacrifice for her, and I thought Olivia's reaction to this willingness to sacrifice was wonderful and real. Sometimes it is enough that the person wants to make the sacrifice to make things ok.

I enjoyed this book and I recommend it.

Jillian holds my gaze for a moment, her eyes drilling into mine before she gently tugs on the material of my jeans near the shin rod of my prosthetic. “What happened to you?” She doesn’t look away. Not down at the fire, not down to my legs. She stares right at me. Although my gut is turning slightly at the thought of telling her what she asked, I forge straight ahead. For the first time, I tell someone who is not medical personnel or a shrink my story. “I was driving a military Humvee and the right front tire ran over a roadside bomb,” I say, and Jillian makes a sound of distress low her in throat as her eyes turn sad. “It completely obliterated my buddy sitting in the passenger seat.” To my surprise, Jillian scoots over closer to me and lays her head on my shoulder. She pushes her hand in between my ribs and my arm, curling her fingers over my bicep. It’s a show of support. Solidarity. That she’s settled in for the long haul of this story, and she wants to hear it all. “It didn’t blow my leg off,” I tell her, and I can feel her body jerk slightly in surprise. Her fingers squeeze my bicep. “The fingers yes, the leg no. It just shattered and shredded it badly, but the doctors tried hard to save it.” “Obviously, they couldn’t,” she whispers the obvious. “They tried for three months,” I tell her, reaching down to grab my phone laying near my left hip. Jillian lifts her head up, watching as I pull up my pictures. I scroll backward, but it doesn’t take long to find what I’m looking for because I don’t take a lot of photos. I hold the phone out so she can see. “This was taken about a month after my injury.” Jillian makes a strangled sound as she looks at the photo of me in bed. My eyes are half open because I was bombed out on so many heavy-duty pain medications, and I have a grimace on my face. I vaguely remember this picture being taken, and I think it may have been by my brother, Hank, when he came to visit once during that first month. He came a few more times after that, and then he didn’t. Jillian’s eyes roam over the photo. My leg is encased in the external fixator with several rods leading from the outside of the cage right into my skin, where it’s drilled through and into the bone to hold the pieces together. The wounds on my leg are all open to the air, red and some of them dripping with puss and lined with blisters. I’ve got IVs in both arms and a PICC line in the right side of my neck to deliver the hordes of antibiotics and pain meds I needed to keep me alive and functioning. I took the maximum dosages they allowed me, preferring to try to be oblivious to what was happening. Yet, the pain was so great it just couldn’t be fully erased. Jillian turns her head to look at me, and I lay the phone back down. “How long were you like that?” “Three months. But they couldn’t get ahead of the infections, which were delaying the bones from knitting. I was in so much pain that I wanted them to amputate.” “You had to make that decision?” she whispers. I nod. “Yup. I mean… the doctors were at the point they felt it was the right way to go, although they were willing to keep trying if I wanted. But I wanted it gone. I was tired of being in the hospital and being in so much pain. I just wanted it gone.” “Do you regret that decision?” she asks me bluntly, but with that still-sweet melody her voice makes. The question doesn’t bother me, because even her hard questions sound lovely. “Yes,” I tell her without any shame. “I wonder what would have happened if I held on just a little bit longer. Not long after the leg came off, the pain receded and I became more lucid. Once I’d forgotten how bad the infections smelled, I regretted it.” “Three months is an awful long time to be in pain like that,” she points out the obvious. I shrug. “And the rest of my life is a long time to wonder ‘what if.’”

Incy Black
Releasing March 20, 2017
Entangled Ignite

Some Black Op missions are too dark—even for him.

Volcanic hot and ambitious Special Agent Will Berwick doesn’t give a damn what his orders are, he’s not taking the enemy—the lovely, but arctic Dr. Angel Treherne—to bed. Nor will she die on his watch, most certainly not by his hand. Oh, he’ll root out her secrets. But his own way—teaching her a much-deserved lesson while he’s at it: that no one messes with his career plan just because they’re a little peeved with him.

Caught up in a tangled web of deceit and betrayal, psychotherapist Angel trusts no one—certainly not alpha-cocky, cunning Will Berwick. First he’s hostile, then he’s charming, now he wants to protect her? Why? What’s he hiding? With her life—and heart—on the line, she needs to know.

With the risks high and personal, can Will and Angel agree the dangerous choices they must make?

To escape the frenzy of three children aged under 4 years, two mad dogs and four very odd cats, Incy Black committed to a law degree (University College, London), first to piss off those who said she didn’t stand a chance, and second, because she’s never learned to walk a hill when there are mountains to be climbed.

When not fighting injustice and righting wrongs on ‘Planet Incy’ via her love of writing romantic action adventures, she works as a Marketing Director…also cook, cleaner and homemaker.

Living in the UK’s West Country, her (now five) children are well versed in what scares her (most things) and delight in pushing her neurotic buttons—at their peril.

DIRTY FILTHY RICH MEN BY LAURELIN PAIGE-BLOG TOUR

SBPR-DFRM-BLOGTOUR

dirtyfilthynewfontfinal

Dirty Filthy Rich Men by Laurelin Paige Genre: Contemporary Romance

From NYT Bestselling author Laurelin Paige, discover a whole new world filled with sex, love, power, romance and dirty, filthy rich men.

When I met Donovan Kincaid, I knew he was rich. I didn’t know he was filthy. Truth be told, I was only trying to get his best friend to notice me.
I knew poor scholarship girls like me didn't stand a chance against guys like Weston King and Donovan Kincaid, but I was in love with his world, their world, of parties and sex and power. I knew what I wanted—I knew who I wanted—until one night, their world tried to bite me back and Donovan saved me. He saved me, and then Weston finally noticed me, and I finally learned what it was to be in their world.
And then what it was like to lose it.
Ten years later, I’ve found my way back. Back to their world. Back to him.
This time, I’m ready. I've been down this road before, and I know all the dirty, filthy ways Donovan will try and wreck me.
But it’s hard to resist. Especially when I know how much I’ll like it.

Ms. Paige, we need to talk.

I love your words, your characters, the stories you tell, the hot sex you write...all of it. When I have a new book by you on my Kindle, all is right in my world...especially if I also have wine.

However, I am not the biggest fan of the cliffhangers. You know, the ones that make me press the next button on my Kindle praying the the 100% in the status bar is a cruel joke. The ones that make me YELL at the characters, consider throwing my Kindle, and generally cry while reading (and drinking more wine).

Donovan, Weston and Sabrina started their story in college. We see a little of them in Dirty Filthy Rich Boys, which was released as a novella but also is in the front of this book, so all is good there.

We see more of all of them in Dirty Filthy Rich Men. A lot more. And we like it.

There are parts of this book that are a little dark, that touch on and explore the things about us that maybe are not the easiest to admit...and there is a scene in which Sabrina realizes that if she is not fully honest the moment is lost. I can't get into it because, spoilers...but it is amazing, it is intense, and it is vintage Laurelin Paige, to take a moment that could be scary and turn it into compelling literature, the kind of literature that makes you wonder if you could be that brave in the same situation.

Weston is the safe choice, the guy you bring home to mom, the one who makes you think you can have all of the things in life, the ones you are supposed to want, to strive for. The things that, when you achieve them, you have success, you are successful.

Donovan is the one who is in the shadows, so to speak. The one you whisper about, the one where nothing feels safe when you are with him. How do you pick? How do you know what is right? Do you follow your heart, your mind, something else?

Sabrina is torn, well, for a little while, between the head and the heart, the logic and the passion, the desire and the rationalization of what she should want. And, she struggles with the idea of having what she wants and what she should want in more ways than just in deciding what man she wants in her life...but that is a journey best explored without spoilers.

The actual writing, for a second as it is a book and we need to discuss the writing. It is precise, and it is really strong, which I have come to expect from Ms. Paige. And, there is an area in which she uses a fade to black which is not a common choice for her, but I thought that doing this within the construction of the story was the perfect way to handle the situation as it was presented...especially as those events had to happen for the rest of the story to work. Again, no spoilers, you will know what I mean when you read it.

The cliffhanger...I am stealing my reaction to it from my friend Lauren, as she summed it up perfectly, is diabolical. In where it leaves us; in where it leaves the characters; in the questions it throws our way by presenting answers to questions we had, but in such a way that the answering of those questions leaves us with more, not fewer, questions we are dying to ask. (See what I mean about diabolical??)

As always, Ms. Paige leaves me wanting more: more of the book, more of the next book and more stars with which to rate the current book.

Excerpt:

After she was gone, I walked over to the windows and drank in the scene. The Town Center was high enough that it had an unblocked view of downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, and beyond. Giddiness surged through me, starting like a pinprick at my center and moving out through my veins in all directions until even my fingers and toes felt warm. I was really here. I made it. It wasn’t the way I thought it would be, but in the end, it still came out of my time at Harvard. I’d always known that connections made the difference in a career, and here I was. Finally. At the top of the world, looking out. I couldn’t stop grinning. “It’s incredible, isn’t it?” a male voice came from behind me. Still smiling, I glanced up and caught his reflection in the window. And everything disappeared. The world that had buzzed below, the beautiful scene, the excitement that had unfurled through my body—all of it evaporated and all that existed in its place was a pale, hollow shell of myself and the man in the perfectly tailored suit behind me. I turned to look at him directly. Our gazes smashed together, and my legs nearly fell out from under me. “Donovan,” I rasped. It was a miracle that I managed to find enough voice to say that much. And there was so much more that had to be said. So much more that I hadn’t prepared for. Which was ridiculous since I’d talked to him so many times in my head over the years, practiced so many conversations, but never did he show up out of the blue looking so dastardly handsome in a dark gray three-piece suit, his face rugged with scruff, his eyes hazel and earnest despite the playful smirk on his lips. I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. I wasn’t even sure how to breathe anymore. He broke our gaze to nod out the window at the skyline, walking toward me as he said, “I’m sure you found the Empire.” Though his focus was now on the scenery, I didn’t take my eyes off him as he approached. He didn’t stop until he was right beside me. So close our shoulders would touch if I coughed. Tension ran off him like foam spilling over from a mug of beer. Good tension. Bad tension. I wasn’t sure if there was a difference when it came to Donovan. Which was why I was screwed if he was here. Why the hell was he here? “I thought you were in Tokyo.” I couldn’t stop staring at him. He’d gotten more refined with age, and rougher at the same time. His hair was short and his curls gone, giving him a polished look he lacked before. The lines by his eyes were more defined and his expression seemed harder than I’d remembered. It made him sexier. As if he was a man who needed to be sexier than the one I knew. “I came back two months ago,” he said offhandedly. “That’s it right there.” He leaned his face in close to mine as he pointed to the famous structure. “Do you see it?” Fuck if I cared about the Empire. I was in Donovan Kincaid’s orbit. What else was there in the world?
