From NYT Bestseller Corinne Michaels & USA Today Bestseller Melanie Harlow, comes a second chance standalone romance.
Ian Chase broke my heart at seventeen, and I’ve spent the last eighteen years hating him for it.
He makes it easy, with his smart mouth and playboy lifestyle—which I unfortunately have to observe since he lives behind me. Every time I see him climbing out of his pool, practically naked and unreasonably sexy, my blood boils.
I’ve always loved to loathe him.
I never planned to need him.
***
London Parish is my little sister’s best friend, not that it stopped me from falling for her.
Our history is complicated. The only thing we have in common is being godparents to my sister’s three adorable kids—until our lives are changed in one tragic moment.
Now we’re trying to raise the children we love, mourn an unthinkable loss, and fight an undeniable attraction.
My life is already upside-down, and the last thing I need is for old feelings to resurface.
Because I’ll never be able to keep her, no matter how hard I try to hold her close.

I feel like I say this about every enemies to lovers book that I read. In fact, I think I do say this...every time.

But, it is true every single time. For me to believe in the lovers to enemies to lovers (or however they got to the enemies part of the relationship) I have to believe that the relationship isn't so damaged from the dislike as I no longer believe they will be able to put it past them. There can be misunderstandings, but they can't be cruel. If there were intentional hurts done to the other, I need to be able to believe the reason. If there is anger, I need to be able to believe they can move past it. In this one, there was a relationship, then there was the anger, and then there is the romance in this book.

The balance of that in this book is perfection. Ian and London were together 17 years ago. There was the beginning of the relationship, and then the realization that she was going to give something up, something major, to stay with Ian. He didn't want the responsibility, the possible future resentment. So, Ian pushed London away. And, then continued to do so...for 17 years. Even though London is best friends with his sister and lives in the house behind his. His sacrifice is something that he is, oddly, proud of. He sees himself as the kind of man who will give up what he wants in order for the people he cares about to be happy.

The dual POV of this title lets the reader know, fairly quickly, that the resentment and the hurt between them is really because there is a lot more going on than either are willing to admit. The hurt is there because of a connection that won't go away. Ian, despite London's belief to the contrary, absolutely was in love with her 17 years ago...and she was in love with him. But, they were both young, and made decisions that seemed right at the time, and ended up apart for 17 years.

Life, as it often does, steps in and forces them to work together, to figure out how to be in the same room, to rely on one another, and to be there for others who need them. And, it is this forced proximity and reliance on one another that not only allows the old feelings to come back, but also allows for those feelings to grow and also to give them a way to work out some of the old resentments.

I loved that the reason they split was that Ian was noble. There's a part in this, that I will not spoil, where Ian discovers the reason for a decision by another person...and it is such a beautiful moment. Ian is seen as the loving, generous, willing to sacrifice man that he is...by all of the people who matter most in his life. And, it is being seen this way that allows him to realize that, sometimes, the sacrifice is too great...and sometimes you have to let people make their own decisions and have their own regrets.

I recommend this title, and I loved it.

***Make sure you get the bonus scene at the end (subscribe to the newsletters...it's absolutely worth it!)***

“Ian,” my bartender, Toby, calls with his hand out. “What’s up?” “You have a call.” He pushes the phone toward me. No one calls the club for me other than vendors, and it’s eleven-thirty at night, so whoever it is can wait. “I have to deal with something now, send them to my voicemail.” He shakes his head. “She’s called three times.” The annoyance in his voice is clear, even over the music. She? The only woman that would resort to calling the club is my ex-wife. God only knows what bullshit she wants now. For all I know she broke a nail, it’s my fault, and she thinks I should pay for her new manicure, or a hand replacement. She’s like the gift you’ve tried to return but can’t find the receipt for, so you’re stuck with it. I hate unwanted presents, and I hate Jolene. “Send the devil to my voicemail,” I say and walk away. I head out to the sidewalk. Drea wasn’t kidding, the line is nuts. “Hello, Officer,” I say to the pudgy cop standing next to the bouncer. “Mr. Chase, we’re getting complaints,” he says, looking down the sidewalk at the line. “I can’t help that we’re popular.” I shrug. “I’m at capacity, and can’t kick out the paying customers to take care of the line.” “You’re obstructing the entrances of other businesses because of the way your overflow lines are set up.” How the hell would they like me to handle it? We’re not inside the casino, there’s no way to control the line. I’m not about to turn away people when we hit the number ten. This is a business, and part of the free marketing I get is thanks to the line. “All right, I’ll figure something out.” I grip the back of my neck. I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. If this is Jolene, I swear to God, I might lose my fucking mind. The name flashes across the screen, London Parish. For fuck’s sake. Like I need to deal with my sister’s uptight, irritating best friend right now. London would be incredibly hot if she wasn’t such a raging bitch. I look at my call log and see this is the third time she’s called. I walk down the strip a little, and after a few deep breaths, I call her back. “Ian, you need to come to my house.” I smirk. “Well, this is a first. Did you have the stick removed from your ass?” “Don’t. Not today, please. Just come here.” I hear her sniff and my protectiveness kicks in. Someone made her cry. We don’t get along at all—partly because we’re polar opposites and partly because of our history—but no one gets to make her cry. “Are you hurt?” I ask. “Not in the way you think.” Her voice hitches. I’ve known London for twenty-five years. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen or heard her cry—I was the reason one of those times. “What’s wrong? Is it an emergency? Because I’m at work and the club—” “Now, Ian. You need to come here now.” She also doesn’t play games. Fuck. I look at my watch and blow a deep breath through my nose. It’ll take me at least thirty minutes to get there. This is seriously a shitty night. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.” “Just . . . hurry,” London says and hangs up. Dread pulls at my stomach, telling me there’s something going on. I don’t know what, but I know I need to get there. “Get rid of the line, no more get in,” I tell the bouncer, and then head inside. Drea is at the bar, and my anxiety is starting to grow. London needs me there, why? What happened? Did someone break into her house? Mine? Maybe it has to do with an ex, if she even has one, or it could be nothing like that. Regardless, her voice was shaky and I can’t waste time wondering. “I have to go,” I tell Drea. Her eyes widen. “Go? Go where? It’s a packed house.” “I’m aware of that, but something came up. I need you to handle things tonight.” I turn to Toby. “Stay until Drea is done closing and I want you to escort her to her car at the end of the night.” He nods. I never let her walk out of here alone. Even if I have someone coming home with me, Drea’s not going to be unescorted. Too many men get the wrong impression because she’s nice to them. Over my dead body will she be hurt as a result of working at my club. After I get in the car, my mind is racing. I drive faster than I should, telling myself that London is just being dramatic. And then I remember . . . she has my nephew and nieces at her house. My foot pushes down on the pedal of my Jaguar, making the engine howl with each mile. I turn into the development where we both live, pass my house, and head to hers. I still hate that our backyards touch. Every damn day I see her sitting out on her deck, reading her books, looking down at me with her disapproving attitude. When I get there, the flashing lights of a police car brighten the road. I don’t think. I don’t know if I even put the car in park before I’m out of the vehicle. “London!” I yell as I rush through the door. “Christopher? Morgan? Ruby?” I call out for the kids, praying it’s not one of them. When I get to the living room, I release a heavy sigh—they’re all there, not hurt. Then I see the tears streaming down Morgan’s face. London gets to her feet. Her eyes are red, puffy, and black mascara runs down her cheeks. “Ian.” She chokes on my name. “What’s wrong? What happened?” The girls start to cry again, and my nephew pulls them into his arms. London moves toward me, placing her hand on my chest. “They’re gone.” “Who?” I ask, confused. “Sabrina and David,” she whispers. Yeah, they went on a trip. Why the hell are they crying? “This is what you called me for? They’ll be home in a few days. Why are you crying too?” I ask. Her green eyes meet mine and her lips part. “No.” She shakes her head. “They won’t.” I look over at the kids again, and then to the muted television. My feet move closer, because I have to be sure the words flashing across the screen say what I think they say. “Flight 1184 crashes off the coast of Hawaii. Three hundred missing and presumed dead.” My sister was going to Hawaii. My sister is gone. I sink to my knees in front of the kids, unsure what to say. They just lost their parents, and my heart is breaking. My sister was my best friend. She was the one who pushed me to open Veil and do what I wanted. I’ve always had her support, and now she’s gone. Christopher lifts his head, his brown eyes filled with unshed tears. “They’ll find them,” he says with conviction. “Okay,” I reply. We both know it’s a lie, but it’s one he has to tell himself. I remember being fifteen; there was no telling me I was wrong. “Dad wouldn’t . . .” he starts, and then stops as his lip quivers. My own tears start to fall, as Morgan grabs my hand. “What do we do now?” I have no fucking clue. How do I tell these kids how to survive? I’m the last person in the world equipped to give this advice. I look to London. Her hand touches my shoulder and she wipes the tears that fall silently down her cheeks. “We hold each other close,” she says.

THE EARL OF LONDON BY LOUISE BAY - ARC REVIEW & RELEASE BLITZ

The Earl Of London by Louise Bay is LIVE! Grab this sizzling, enemies to lovers STANDALONE today for a limited time release price of $2.99!

Love left me off its to-do list.

I date. I’m all for giving guys a chance. I’ve just never met the one.

Until on a spring morning in the English countryside, a tall, dark stranger emerges from the mist.

Logan Steele is all tousled hair, hard chest and lips so perfect I want to reach out and touch them just to check they’re real. I’m sure that’s a thunderclap of chemistry I feel between us.

Did I mention he’s an Earl with a self-made fortune?

A billionaire who works tirelessly for charity?

And he’s so hot, watching him is like staring at the sun.

But like I said, love isn’t rooting for me.

When I find out Logan Steele is out to destroy everything I’ve dedicated my life to protect, the chemistry disappears and the hope that had blossomed my chest turns to rage.

It no longer matters that he quickens my pulse just saying my name, weakens my knees with a single touch and that he might just be the greatest kisser that ever lived.

I might believe in love but Logan Steele is definitely not the one.

Logan is rich, and used to getting what he wants, and used to being able to buy the things he wants. He buys estates, shows up in helicopters, and makes sure he has the finest things in life.

Darcy has family money, and she is used to being respected in her home village, and also feels responsible for the people in the town, and for the quality of life in the town.

There's an instant connection and attraction between them...until Darcy realizes that Logan is trying to develop a portion of the estate he just bought...and will ruin the quiet feel of the town. And, then the connection no longer matters to her, as he is threatening her town.

The attraction they have for one another was tangible and it jumped off the page. This was an enemies to lovers, but it started with an attraction, so it made it feel a little more like a couple who had a connection and needed to figure out if the connection was stronger than their cross purposes.

That, really, is what romance is about. Many couples meet and life happens and the relationship ends as it is not able to be sustained. In the relationships that last, those challenges are bumps in the road that are worth working out. Watching Darcy and Logan realize that they wanted to work it out, and that their connection was strong enough, was a lot of fun and I enjoyed this title.

I recommend this book.

This is a standalone book but it deals with characters that as a Louise Bay fan I've met before. I've wanted Darcy's story since first meeting her and I have to say that it was worth the wait. I enjoyed this book and the perspective it showed.

I really truly liked Darcy. I liked her spirit and spunk. I love how fiercely protective she was of her village and way of life, even as the realization as to why she was so protective made me a bit sad. I just wanted to hug her. She's the type of character I would definitely be friends with.

Logan had me captivated from the first moment he was introduced on the page. I wanted to know more about him, to figure him out like a puzzle. Because he was a bit of a puzzle to me at times but I loved seeing all the pieces of him fall into place. He was a sexy, smart and kind man.

These two have chemistry that just drips off the page, even when they desperately didn't want to. I loved watching their journey from enemies (sort of) to lovers and seeing them figure out different things along the way. They weren't expecting each other at all and sometimes that makes for the best story.

I enjoyed briefly catching up with some past characters from other Louise Bay titles. The supporting characters here didn't overwhelm at all, they enhanced Darcy and Logan. I loved this setting. I loved seeing how this plot unfolded and thought the pacing and writing were spot on. I definitely enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

The room wasn’t overly large, and it was—seemingly—empty. It also wasn’t terribly well lit, with a low fire burning in the grate and a pair of sconces flickering on the wall on either side of the fireplace. She was either beneath the desk or behind the curtain. He couldn’t see the underside of the desk from the door. It wasn’t a pedestal as Lord Evenrude’s had been. Circling around, he saw no one hiding there. That left the draperies on the window. He moved to the far wall and instantly noted the slight lump behind the blue damask. Moving forward, he reached for the fabric but hesitated before he pushed it aside. What if it wasn’t her? The fabric moved, and she bared her face. “You found me.” Her dark gaze registered surprise. “Oh, it’s you!” “It’s me.” “Are you still looking for a place to hide?” “I am.” She reached for his lapel and held the drapery wide, pulling him into the darkness beside her. “He’ll be done counting shortly. If he isn’t already.” “I should probably hide somewhere else,” he said, though he was loath to move. Ensconced in the dark with Lavinia, he was acutely aware of her heat and the intoxicating scent of lilies and honeysuckle. “Yes, I suppose you should.” She turned toward him, and they were so close, her breasts brushed against his chest. “Sorry,” she murmured. God, he wasn’t. He was only sorry he had to leave. “Before you go, I wanted to thank you again for the fossils.” She whispered, her breath tickling his neck as she spoke. “I can’t stop looking at them. They’re absolutely extraordinary. I hope I have reason to visit Devon one day so I can hunt for my own.” “I hope you do too. Consider yourself welcome at Waverly Court any time.” “That’s very kind of you.” He heard the smile in her voice and resisted the urge to run his fingers over her mouth so he could feel the curve of her lips. He really should go— But first, he wanted to ask her something. “Do you know the Duchess of Kendal?” “Yes, but not well. Fanny’s sister is a good friend of hers. Why?” Why indeed. Beck wanted to enlist Lavinia’s help to see if the Duchess might be able to help him learn who SW and DC might be. However, if the Duchess had been part of a scandal, she might prefer to leave those memories in the past. Furthermore, he wasn’t sure he should include Lavinia in any of this. And yet, he found he simply couldn’t resist. “Do you know what happened with the Duchess when she was out in Society—maybe sixteen years ago? The Duke mentioned something, and I was curious. Because my sister was out at the same time.” He added the last because he felt he had to share a reason for his inquiry. Still, he hated bringing Helen up since he didn’t want to answer too many questions about her, particularly regarding her fate. “She was compromised. A gentleman—I can’t remember who—wooed her. They were caught kissing, and he refused to marry her. She was ruined. It was horrible because it wasn’t even her fault. It’s so unfair. Men can kiss whomever they want, and women are blamed for any indiscretion.” “The key is to not get caught. It sounds as though this gentleman was rather inept.” “Are you saying it was his fault?” She sounded surprised. “Most would argue they were at least both to blame.” “Certainly she retains some culpability, but a decent gentleman would ensure they could kiss and not get caught.” “And how would they do that?” Something in her tone changed. Her voice lowered, and it felt as though she’d moved just a hair closer. If he leaned just a tiny bit forward, he was sure he’d feel her breasts again. God, how he wanted to. “They might hide themselves behind a drapery in the library.” “During hide-and-seek?” Beck’s cock lengthened and grew stiff as the air around them heated. “Probably not. In that case, someone is actually looking to find them.” “And yet here we are.” Her voice had changed again, going nearly breathless. “Yes, here we are.” “Are you going to, then?” she asked, her breasts grazing his chest as she edged herself against him. “Kiss me.” “By God, I think I am.” “Oh, good.”

UNDER CONTROL BY SHANNON STACEY - ARC REVIEW

When faced with the opportunity to change shifts while staying in the same house, veteran firefighter Derek Gilman jumps at the chance. His new schedule means not working Saturdays, which means more time to spend with his two kids. His divorce may have been amicable, but being a firefighter and a single dad is a lot to juggle. And when fate brings a gorgeous, wealthy woman into his life, he’s pretty sure he can’t handle more than he already is.

Olivia McGovern loves plans. She planned to start her own business and planned its growth. It’s earning her seven figures now, but her personal life simply doesn’t exist. Getting trapped in a broken elevator figures in exactly nowhere, and freaking out in front of a sexy firefighter definitely isn’t on the agenda. Especially not one with two kids and an ex.

What would have been a random incident with an attractive stranger becomes something more when a charity event brings them back together. They’re from different sides of the tracks, literally—with friends, family and careers to consider. But as Derek and Olivia are discovering, chemistry doesn’t allow for plans, and love doesn’t bother with logistics.

Derek and Olivia meet when they are trapped in an elevator together. They make it work for them...I can't say anyone who is trapped in an elevator with me will still want anything to do with me by the time we are freed....but that is not the point.

Olivia has a plan. For everything. Ever. And, it's written down, as it's not an official plan until it's written down.

Derek, well, he has kids. So, less of a plan and more of a list of things he hopes work out on his days off and while the kids are in school or with their mother.

These are not people who should work. Their attraction shouldn't be one they are unable to forget, it shouldn't keep them awake at night thinking of the other, knowing that they won't ever see one another again. Until they do, at a meeting for a charity Derek is involved with and Olivia has just started volunteering for.

Sparks fly (I had to make at least one fire reference, I just had to) and the relationship moves more quickly than either of them planned. Well, Olivia planned it, as she schedules EVERYTHING.

But, their lives don't work well together. He has kids, she lives in the city. He can't afford to live where she does, and won't allow her to pay for their home. So, where do they go from this point?

In life, and in a romance novel, things happen that reset your expectations. And, when those expectations change, you find yourself a little more open to the things you thought would never work but are so worth it when you manage to figure out a way to balance everything.

I thought the balance of the story, the 2 people coming together, and wanting to be together, and being willing to figure out what needed to be done felt authentic. And, for me to be willing to believe in the happily ever after for the characters, I need to believe in the connection being stronger than anything struggling to pull them apart. I believed it here.

I recommend this story.
