Hot Addiction - About the book

HotAddiction_800x1200

First glance into Hot Addiction by Lynn Raye Harris.

Five years ago…

Dexter Davidson checked his watch for the thousandth time that morning. It was nearing noon and his bride-to-be was over an hour late. His father stood in the chancel, his rented tuxedo making him appear distinguished and genteel rather than rough and worn like the farmer he was. But the look on his face was what killed Dex the most. It was one of pity and a growing resignation.

“Fuck this,” Dex growled as he clenched his jaw tight and walked down the aisle, between the rows of pews where the guests waited for the ceremony to start. The chapel doors were open to the outside because it was springtime and warm. But it was also raining. A soft, gentle rain, but rain nonetheless.

Perhaps the rain had caused a delay. Dex stood in the open door and took his phone from his pocket. Annabelle still hadn’t answered his texts. He sent another one, just in case, and felt his heart shrivel just a little bit more when no answer came.

He tried calling but it went to voicemail without even ringing. “Belle,” he said, his throat tight and his eyes stinging, “where are you, baby? I’m worried. Please let me know you’re safe. If you’ve changed your mind, it’s okay. Just let me know.”

It wasn’t okay if she’d changed her mind, but what else could he say? Annabelle Quinn had been his girl for the past four years. He’d fallen madly in love with her in an instant. He’d known her most of his life, had ignored her for much of it because she was his little sister’s best friend, but one day, pow!, she’d smiled at him the way she had a million times before—and he was done for. He’d been hers from that moment forward.

And now they were supposed to be getting married. He’d come home on leave from the Army at Christmas and asked her to marry him. She’d said yes. She and his sister had planned everything while he went back to Afghanistan and did his best to stay alive. He didn’t know how long he stood there before he felt a presence beside him.

“I’m sorry, Dex.” Katie put a hand on his arm. “She’s not coming.”

Lynn Raye Harris is a go to author for me. I like the mix of romance and tough guy/military that she writes as it is always well-balanced.

The fun of any elite military book is that they are capable...and more so than your average stockbroker hero, and in this one, Dex does not disappoint. And, the fact that he is capable, that you can trust him, and that he is the guy you want to have your back when there is a situation is exactly what Annabelle uses as her reason to reach out to him...and it is the reason he is ultimately not able to turn her away.

Dex and Annabelle have a history, and it is a harsh, heartbreaking one that leaves you with no doubt as to why Dex still holds a grudge. I think we all would...although, the more details you get from Annabelle, the more she tells Dex, the more his walls start to erode. And, you can understand why. The reasons behind what happened in the past are bad enough that you can move to forgive in the future. And, that is important.

The writing and the characters were strong, you like Dex and Annabelle and you want things to work out for them. You can feel her hurt and anguish over their past, and you can feel his anger...and those strong emotions tell you that there is still something there in the present.

I recommend this book.

AIN'T HE PRECIOUS BY JULIETTE POE-RELEASE DAY LAUNCH

FanPageBannerNowAvailable

Ain't-He-Precious-FOR WEB-new

Welcome to Whynot, North Carolina, population 3,872. It has one stoplight, one bar, and the one-and-only Trixie Mancinkus.

Eleven years ago, Trixie graduated Harvard Law, turned down a job offer from one of the most prestigious law firms in Boston, and headed home to Whynot to open her own firm. Not only did she leave behind the big city, but she also left her boyfriend of three years. And just so we’re clear… that would be me.

So what am I doing in Whynot at this very moment? It seems Trixie needs help with a legal case and for some insane reason, she called on me for assistance. I’ve been in town for five minutes, and I’m every bit as out of place as I feel. Trixie is all sweet, southern curves to my tailored suits and high-priced haircuts. It’s a culture clash of north versus south and about the only thing we have in common is our physical attraction to each other.

But I have a new motto since coming to Whynot: When life hands you lemons, all you need is a little sex and sweet tea to make things better.

Catfish

Suddenly, my pole jerks in my hands, and I instinctively snap the tip upward into the air. I feel something catch as the pole bends in an extreme arc. “Holy shit,” I exclaim as I sit up straighter in the boat. “That’s a big one,” Pap says, and Trixie laughs with delight. “Now… keep the rod up and reel it in.” I plant my feet hard on the bottom of the boat and crank my catch in. My heart is racing because I don’t know what’s on the other end of the line, but it feels massive. I reel and reel and reel, watching as the end of the line in the water comes closer to the boat. I see a flash of grayish-brown thrash at the top of the water before the fish dives back down deep, but I keep cranking that spinner. Pap sets his pole aside, grabs a net, and leans forward, balancing himself with a hand on the edge of the boat. I give another mighty heave on the spinner’s handle, and the fish comes to the surface. “Oh, my God,” Trixie practically shrieks with excitement as her feet come off the edge of the boat. She leans closer to me. “He caught Ol’ Mud. I was knee high to a grasshopper the last time someone managed that.” Pap grunts in acknowledgment, scooping the net into the water under my catch. He proceeds to pull it up, and in it is the biggest, ugliest fish I’ve ever seen in my life. Not that I’ve seen many up close and personal. I mean, I went snorkeling in the Cayman’s once, but those were all brightly colored fish with long, flowing tails. This thing is indeed the color of mud, with enormous eyes that seem to be rolling and long whiskers sticking out from around its mouth. “What the hell is that thing?” I ask in horror. “That’s a flathead catfish,” Pap says as he hauls him in and carefully maneuvers him out of the net with practiced efficiency. He pulls the hook out of the corner of the fish’s mouth and then holds him up for me to see. The fish is massive and thrashes in Pap’s hands, but he grips him firmly before pushing him my way. “Want to hold him?” I recoil slightly. “Um… no, but thank you.” Trixie snickers behind me. “Oh, God… ain’t he precious?” Pap snorts but doesn’t give me too much shit. “Suit yourself. Take a picture, Trixie.” I turn in my seat and watch Trixie pull her phone from her pocket. Pap scoots closer to me and holds the damn fish up over my shoulder—which, in addition to fish, smells like mud too—and chuckles, “Smile for the camera, city boy.” Trixie holds the phone out, grinning as she takes a picture of Pap and me as he holds that slimy, nasty-looking catfish. I know my manhood took a bit of a ding with my refusal to hold it, and I can’t say I’m thrilled that Trixie thinks I’m precious, but screw it… not going to apologize for my failure to bond with that smelly thing. To my amazement, Pap leans over the side of the boat and slides it gently into the water while murmuring, “Until we meet again, Ol’ Mud.” “You let it go?” I ask incredulously. While the thing was scary looking as all get out, I’ve eaten catfish before and it’s delicious. I have also witnessed Catherine’s cooking firsthand, and I bet she’d do heavenly things to that fish. Besides… I thought that’s what you did in the south. You hunted shit and you ate it. “Ol’ Mud’s been in this lake for years,” Trixie says by way of explanation. “He’s rarely been caught, but we always release him. He’s like an icon around here. The fact that you caught him, and in the morning, is amazing.” “Really?” I ask, a small pattering of pride thumping in my chest. “Flathead’s normally sleep during the day, usually down under lake debris,” Pap explains. “They’re easiest to catch at night, but I don’t think Ol’ Mud’s ever been caught in daylight hours, right, Trix?” “Right, Pap,” she says and then winks at me. “We might turn you into a southern boy yet, Ry.”

RESISTANCE ON ICE BY S.R. GREY-RELEASE BLITZ

Title: Resistance on Ice
Series: Boys of Winter #2
Author: S.R. Grey
Genre: Sports Romance/Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 10, 2017

Blurb

Praised by Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Ilsa Madden-Mills as "the usual Grey crisp writing, lovable heroes that you kinda want to slap, and a heroine that doesn't back down," Resistance on Ice is another fun standalone novel in the Boys of Winter hockey romance series.

Hockey star Nolan Solvenson is nothing short of skilled perfection, both on and off the ice. Or so everyone thinks. His teammates are constantly hitting him up for advice, but really, when it comes to his own life, Nolan can't seem to make the right moves anymore.

Blame it all on Lainey Shelburne, a woman he wants but is determined to keep at arm’s length. That’s why, after a few sexy encounters, he unceremoniously blows her off.

When they’re reunited, facing off against the fiery cocktail waitress becomes the challenge of his life. Lainey is furious with him for dumping her and wants nothing more than to kick him in the junk. But Nolan—typical man—is only interested in getting Lainey back in his bed.

That plan is shot all to hell when they reach a shaky truce and Lainey drops the bomb that all she’s looking for now is a "just friends" relationship with Nolan.

Take that, Mr. Hot Right Winger!

Suddenly, the "know-it-all" athlete is skating on thin ice as he tries to hide his burgeoning feelings from the one woman who has the ability to thaw his heart. But is Lainey willing to try a relationship with him again? Can Nolan resist the urge to walk away?

Resistance on Ice is a fun standalone novel and the second installment in the bestselling Boys of Winter hockey romance series.

I have been waiting for this book since finishing Destiny on Ice, the first in S.R. Grey's Boys of Winter books. This book can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the first in the series to start. I adored Nolan and Lainey and loved getting to see how their story played out.

Nolan was a bit of a tough nut to crack-which just made me more desperate to find out why he was so anti-relationships. He was sexy, swoonworthy but he kept holding himself back. I wanted to push him, just like Lainey did, and the reward of him finally admitting what his problem was worth the wait to me. I sympathized with him even when I wanted to shake him.

I adored Lainey. I liked her free spirit, her determination. She was much more confident than most female characters I've read lately and I LOVED that. Lainey is the type of character I'd want as a friend in real life. She had me laughing out loud at some of her antics and I applauded her effort-and resolve-when it came to dealing with Nolan.

This book was a second chance romance-which I loved. I loved watching them figure out if the other person was worth it, trying to decide how they'd move forward with having each other in their lives. I will say the ending surprised me a bit but when I reflect back on it, it truly fits the characters.

This book was a fun read that I didn't want to end. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series and recommend this one for sure.

Excerpt

Scene set-up: Nolan is not happy about being interviewed by radio shock jock, Marty Quick, and there’s a good reason why….
Marty finishes up with his Stanley Cup questions, and goes straight to the place that had me dreading this interview in the first place.

“Let’s get to the good stuff, Solvenson,” he begins, grinning over at me like a perv. “Word on the street is you’re quite the ladies’ man.”

Looking down at the tiny table that separates me from the host in what has taken on the feel of a far too enclosed space, I run my hand through my dark hair. “I don’t know about that,” I reply. “Rumors are usually just that—rumors.”

He’s unconvinced, I can tell, but too bad. This is a question I plan to evade like my reputation depends on it. And it may. After I fucked things up with Lainey back in April, I was so distraught that I sought out solace in the form of a slew of strippers.

And I don’t mean I found comfort in being with a new one night after night.

Er, though I may have done some of that too.

“Aw, come on,” Marty continues in his patented taunting tone. “All of Canada—no, wait, all of North America wants an answer.” Shit, this show does have a far reach. “Is it true you banged ten strippers in one night?”

I laugh nervously. “No, no, that’s not true at all.”

It was actually nine and occurred over the course of two days, but who’s counting?

Not me. And not anyone else if I have anything to say about it. Besides, the only thing that matters is I’m not technically lying.

See, that’s my shtick in life—being clever, outwitting everyone. I’m a wise old sage at the age of twenty-six. My teammates call me things like “sensei” and “Yoda.” And, hey, I’m cool with that. Why wouldn’t I be? It works out great for me.

That’s why if I stick to the gray areas now with Marty, I can successfully evade giving him a straight answer for the next ten minutes, the time left in the interview.

Yeah, you’re real clever all right. So clever you outwitted your own damn self with the shit you pulled with Lainey.

“You look a little uneasy there,” Shock Jock observes when he sees me frowning. “You sure there’s not even a modicum of truth to that stripper story.”

“Yep, I’m sure,” I snap.

I need to get out of here, and fast. I’m done talking about strippers. And I’m done with this shitty interview. But most of all, I’m done with staying away from Lainey. It’s time we have a talk—a real talk.
And if talking doesn’t work, I’ll do what I do best—fuck her till she agrees to start seeing me again.
