JUST LIKE THAT BY NICOLA RENDELL-RELEASE BLITZ

AP new - synopsis.jpg
"I bet I can untangle you."

At an airport baggage claim, Penny Darling looks up from her knotted mess of ear buds to find the sexiest hunk of man she's ever seen. He's got a military haircut, a scar through his eyebrow, and he's rocking a pastel pink dress shirt like only a real man can. But Penny is on a man-free diet so she leaves the airport without succumbing to his delicious double-entendres...or his dreamy dimples.

PI Russ Macklin can't take his eyes off Penny. As she sashays out of the airport with hips swaying and curls bouncing, he suspects they may share more than just sweltering chemistry. That suitcase she's rolling along behind her? It looks a lot like his.

Because it is.

When he tracks her down, he holds her bag hostage in exchange for a date. Their night begins with margaritas and ends in urgent care, and Russ proves that Cosmo's theory about a very particular type of orgasm was oh-so-wrong.

In Penny, Russ finds a small-town sweetheart with a very naughty side. For the first time ever, he’s thinking about picket fences. Penny finds in Russ a loving, caring man who understands the power of massaging showerheads.

But Russ is only in Port Flamingo for a week. They agree it'll be a fling and nothing more. Because really, they can't fall ass-over-teakettle in love just like that...

Can they?

99k words. HEA. Dual POV. No cheating.
Featuring a big drooly dog named Guppy.

Nicola Rendell was a breakout author for me in 2016. I fell in love with her writing in Professed and that carried over through Confessed and Hail Mary. Just Like That continues her streak for me-I absolutely loved every minute of this. If you're looking for a great romantic comedy with scorching heat look no further than Just Like That.

I quite simply adored Penny Darling. I thought she was funny, realistic and honest. What you see with her is what you get-which is incredibly refreshing. She is fiercely loyal to her hometown, to her family and friends. She's the type of woman I would want to sit down and hang out with.

Russ took me by surprise. I knew I'd like him because Nicola wrote him but I didn't think I'd love him as much as I do. He's smart, protective and sexy. Boy, is he sexy. I enjoyed seeing him chase after Penny; it made them coming together even more fun. I have a tendency to claim book boyfriends and I definitely claim Russ for my own.

There's an instant spark between Russ and Penny but it's believable. Sometimes the instant connections in books feel forced but that is definitely not the case here. The two of them together are steamy and sexy and wonderful.

This book had me laughing throughout-from the mayor to the antics of Penny's friends and family I just couldn't help giggling. As someone who has lived in a small town all of her life I could definitely relate to some of these antics. But these characters and their actions only added to Russ and Penny's story. They didn't clutter it as secondary characters sometimes do. I truly enjoyed them all.

I recommend this book!

I struggled with this book at the beginning and, for some reason, I had a hard time warming up to Russ. I liked Penny from the start, her quirky life, her town with no cell signal and her insanely large dog...all great. So I kept going, as I figured I would warm up to Russ, just like Penny did.

And I did. This book is laugh-out-loud funny, and in more than one place I found myself questioning how in the world Nicola Rendell thinks of these things. The humor works well, and it flows well, but OMG some of the observations had me in stitches and pondering how her brain works to even come up with that stuff.

I loved the chemistry for Penny and Russ, and I adored that I believed that they really would be able to make a go of their relationship. I like it, when I get to the end of a book, that I really believe the characters have a happily ever after that is going to stick. In this case, I definitely think they are perfect for one another.

There were places where I thought that the humor overshadowed the romance a little, but that is what I think the author was going for, to make this a real laugh out loud book filled with pink flamingo mailboxes, loony cocktail yoga friends and Urgent Cars centers that used to be a pizza place (don't worry, no spoilers, all of those references are minor and VERY early in the book).

I do recommend this, especially for people who are looking for a really quirky, fun romance read with some seriously hot sexy times.

Russ

In my shopping cart, I’ve got assorted gifts: a box of wine, like I saw in her fridge; every kind of salt-and-vinegar potato chips they sell; a box of Dots; some Kama Sutra warming massage oil because I couldn’t fucking resist.
And that just leaves one more thing.
I put my basket down by a display of cupcakes and clear my throat. “I need to get something written on a cake.”
The baker turns around. She pulls her hairnet off her head and says, “I’m leaving for the night, sir. I can take your order, but it’ll have to be for tomorrow.”
This part can’t wait. Penny needs to know I’m not sleeping on this. She needs to know I listened to every single thing she said—every last detail, every last word.
I lean forward, putting my hands on the curved glass case. I glance at the baker’s nametag and then look her in the tired, baggy eyes. “Jacquie. It’s urgent. I fucked up, and I need to apologize.”
“The bait shop has some nice carnations. Usually.”
“Already tried that. Didn’t take.”
She gives me a stern stare, like if the blue carnations didn’t do it, I must really be in the shit.
“Jacquie. Please.”
She inhales long and hard, pursing her lips tight. “I’ve got my bowling group in twenty minutes.” She points backward toward the freezers, and I see a turquoise bowling shirt hanging on the back of a door. “I’m sorry, sir. I don’t have time.” She starts undoing her apron, which is a smudgy, colorful explosion of frostings. “Like I said, come back tomorrow. I’ll be glad to do whatever you’d like then.”
I pull out my wallet and open the billfold. “I’ll pay your overtime. I’ll pay your lane fees. I’ll buy you a new goddamned pair of bowling shoes. Whatever you want.” I put a fifty on the counter, next to the crumbly remains of some free cookies. “I just need a cake, tonight, with a message written on it.”
She looks at the money and then back at me.
“Jacquie. We’re talking about…” What the hell are we talking about? Chemistry? Sparks? That feeling in my gut that I’ve never felt before? Happiness? No, it’s more than that, and there’s only one word for it. “Love, Jacquie. We’re talking about love.”
Holy fuck. As soon as I say it, I know it’s true. Just a few days with Penny and I’m saying the word I’ve never said before—the one I never thought I’d ever say at all.
She lowers her nose, crumpling her chin into her throat. “Love?”
“Love. Like love-at-first-sight, different-planet, just-like-that love.”
She sighs hard, considering the cash. And then finally she untangles her hairnet from her palm, slipping it over her crunchy curls. “Five minutes. Pick out your cake. I’ve only got time for writing, though. No extra flowers. No balloons. No decoration. No sprinkles. We’re clear?”
“Jacquie, you’re a life saver,” I say, and pull a small round cake, decorated with pink roses, from the display shelf below. I slide it across the bakery case as she reties her apron. Then she takes a pad of paper and hands me a pen.
“Print what you want. Nice and clear. No cursive. I’m not letting one of my cakes become a hashtag bakery fail, all right?” She puts on a pair of plastic food service gloves and pops the lid off the cake. She sets it on a pedestal to the left of the register.
I pick up the pen and look at the blank pad, thinking about what I want to say and how.
It isn’t Shakespeare. It’s the truth. Six words does the job. When I’m finished, I put the pad on the other side of the case. “There.”
Her gloves crinkle as she reads it, and then she recoils a little. She gives me a shame on you shake of her head. “Sir, this is a family establishment. I can’t write that on a cake.”
I pull another fifty out of my wallet. “How about now?”

Just One Spark

Title: Just One Spark
Author: Jami Wagner
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Just One Spark:

All Beth Moyer wanted was a one-night stand, an evening to relax and cut loose before she went to work at her new grown-up job. Instead, all she got was a few minutes that left her mortified and another reason why you can never trust a man. Maverick Mitchell is ready to prove he’s learned from his mistakes and move forward. But before it’s time to buckle down, one last fling won’t hurt. Or so he thought. On the first day of his new start, the feisty redhead he met over the weekend is the first person he sees. An office romance isn’t the smartest idea. Sneaking around is an even worse one, but neither can deny the fire that has sparked between them. Considering Beth and Maverick are competing for the same position and only one will be offered the job, they can only hope that every choice they’ve made doesn’t end up in flames.

I liked a lot of things about this book, but there was one that I was not able to totally ever believe, so it lost some of the tension that maybe should have been there.

Beth and Maverick were a one night stand that wasn't, and I love the books that start with an awkward first meeting and then put the characters into a sitution where, no matter how awkward the start, they are not able to avoid being around the other person. In this case, it was a job in a competitive field, 3 employees, and only one of them getting the job at the end.

And, this is where the issue came in for me. Beth is a new grad. Maverick is the son of the president of the company and has been working there for a few years. They are not going to be able to compete in skill level and ability...so the idea that Maverick could lose, and lose his job at the end of 3 months never really worked for me.

But, the idea of Maverick and Beth? That worked for me. The best office romances are the ones where they are not able to stay away from one another while at work, and there is sneaking and forbidden...that was definitely there, and it was fun.

This is my first book by this author, and I am definitely interested in checking out other titles, as I do recommend this book.

RESTRAINED UNDER HIS DUTY BY STACEY KENNEDY-ARC REVIEW

An uninhibited politician’s daughter falls for her loyal bodyguard behind closed doors in this scandalous novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Bound Beneath His Pain and Tied to His Betrayal.

As the chief of security for a prominent senator, Ryder Blackwood is stunned when an anonymous source sends him a compromising photo of his boss’s twenty-five-year-old daughter getting down and dirty in an underground sex club. If it gets out, the media firestorm could ruin her father. More troubling for Ryder is how arousing he finds the whole situation. He’s known Hadley Winters since she was a kid. And now she’s the woman in all his most private fantasies.

Wild behavior helps Hadley get through those painful, lonely nights, but she’s been waiting a long time for a man like Ryder to protect her from herself. Ryder is raw. He’s real. And he makes her feel safe. Now that they’ve both become pawns in a blackmailer’s dangerous game, there’s more at stake than her father’s political career. As the intimate threats tear apart a tender new love, Hadley is forced to trust Ryder with her life—and her heart.

I like Stacey Kennedy, and I like this series. I was looking forward to this one...and as a book, it did not disappoint, but as a part of the series, I wanted more of the rest of the men, and more resolution in the situation with the bug in the bar that was revealed in the previous book.  I felt there was a lot of build up on that situation that was not fully developed in this book.

That said, the attraction and the chemistry with Hadley and Ryder was wonderful, it was hot, and it was compelling.  I loved the idea that the stop to them being together was Ryder and that, ironically, her father really had no issue with it (don't worry, happens really early) and you know almost immediately that it is his sense of duty (hence the title) that is causing any issues with them being together.

The writing was strong, as was the pacing around the relationship.  There were parts that I felt were cut out too early, but this was around the bug, and the issues that were brought up in the other books.

For the relationship, the chemistry, and the story of Hadley and Ryder, I totally recommend this book...but if you are looking for a lot of forward momentum in the other story, there is not a lot in this one.  It is not totally ignored, but it feels like a lot less of a focus than it was in the earlier books.

I do recommend this book.

STRIPPED BARE BY HEIDI MCLAUGHLIN-ARC REVIEW

They don’t call it the Strip for nothing. . . .

In this sinfully sexy Las Vegas romance from bestselling author Heidi McLaughlin, a man who has it all reunites with a woman who takes it all off.

Living in Sin City, Finn McCormick is no stranger to one-night stands, but the last person he expects to find losing big on the casino floor is a former high school fling. Even though Macey Webster’s clearly down on her luck, she’s still a knockout, and she’s dressed like a stripper—because she is one. Drunk off an unfamiliar cocktail of lust, pity, and compassion, Finn offers to pay Macey’s debts if she cuddles up to him around town . . . and does whatever he wants between the sheets.

Macey came to Vegas for one reason only: money. She’s got a young daughter to support, and the tips really are bigger in Vegas. But when she blows her earnings on blackjack, her guardian angel is the rich boy who once stole her heart and never called her back. Although Macey would love to turn the tables on Finn, she can’t afford to refuse his proposition—and soon she’s enjoying herself much more than she cares to admit. Macey’s used to baring her flesh, but baring her soul will take far more courage.

This book, for lack of a better word, was a little harsh.  It was romantic in places, but it also felt a little gritty, a little on the less romantic side of things.  Which, is ok if it is handled well, but a tough read if the overall feeling is that you are watching the lowest side of life.

I liked Macey, a lot.  She was down on her luck, and she was struggling, but she was doing her best.  That said, there were a few things that didn't seem true to me, and the way she met Finn, after losing all of the money she went to Vegas to earn, didn't seem very in character.

Finn on the other hand, was a jerk.  And, while he gets better, it is never enough to over shine the initial impression of him as cold, and heartless.

I think, for me, this one suffered a little bit in the fact that there were some clear Pretty Woman parallels, Macey a stripper, Finn a rich casino owner who hires her for the week to accompany him places, with no other strings guaranteed. This is definitely a story we have heard before, and in this instance it did not work as well as it has in others.

The difference is, you liked the leads in Pretty Woman...but in this, Finn just came across like a jerk.  He wasn't all that sympathetic and really doesn't seem like someone you want to get to know all that well.

As the story goes on, I didn't really warm up to Finn.  I never really thought he was great, and I always found him to be rather harsh and cold.

I don't really recommend this book.

SWEET SPOT BY STELLA RHYS-RELEASE BOOST

Blurb

Our first meeting as neighbors was screwed from the start.

He was hot. I was naked. And we had no chance in hell at ever being platonic.

I’ll be the first to admit that I live at extremes. After going ten years locked in what felt like a dysfunctional marriage, I’m now decidedly boy-free. In nearly three years I’ve had no boyfriends, no flings, no dates and no sex. For the sake of my dream career, the sacrifice has been easy.

At least it was.

Until Lukas came along.

He’s rude, gorgeous, arrogant – a stone-carved wall of muscle and distraction. He’s everything I know to avoid but there’s no avoiding your next-door neighbor. Oh yeah. The man now lives three steps from me and to make matters worse, he crashed into my life while I was soaked in the tub. Mortifying to say the least and it went something like this: I ran out exposed. He looked. He laughed.

And then I locked myself out.

In short, Lukas Hendricks was smirking, swaggering trouble from the start. And me?

I was – for the first time in years – about to be screwed.

ILLICIT BY AVA HARRISON-RELEASE BLITZ

Blurb

I was never supposed to see him again.
One night of passion with a complete stranger.
My last tryst before senior year.
But I was lost the moment his tempting lips were on my skin.
His intense touch on my body.

It should have ended there.

But he’s not a stranger.
He’s my history teacher.
And wanting him is against the rules.
Off limits.
Forbidden.

Illicit.

Illicit was my first exposure to Ava Harrison and I enjoyed it. I was a little concerned at first that I wouldn't be able to get into the right mindset on this one (not that I don't enjoy student/teacher/forbidden type books) since it was a high school setting, but the fact that age gap between them wasn't overwhelming helped me. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming, sexy times and some sweetness to balance it all out.

I liked Lynn-much more than I expected to. I was prepared for a giggly school girl and that was definitely not who Lynn is. She's smart, brave and a bit broken. She hasn't been dealt the greatest hand in life so to watch her grow through that was good and I thought well written.

Carson had many more hidden layers than I was expecting-and I liked them. I liked that he wasn't this perfect, slightly older man who swooped in and swept Lynn off her feet and solved all of her problems. I also really liked the direction the author took in regards to showing Carson's own growth-she didn't blow off his issues and I think did a good job highlighting that people can need help and that's ok.

Some of the drama with Lynn's mom was a bit over the top to me. I just didn't think all of it was necessary to advance the plot.

I really enjoyed how the author told this story. The forbidden element was definitely there, the irresistible pull between them was really written well. I will definitely read more from this author and I recommend this book.

Forbidden romance can be a lot of fun when it is done right, and this one was. Lynn is a high school student, Carson is her teacher. They have one night, they don't exchange info, and then he shows up in her life again...as her history teacher.

This is the 2nd book I have read about Ava Harrison, and the idea of the taboo, the forbidden, is definitely a theme.

Lynn and Carson are both really young. Usually, this bothers me, the idea that she is 18 and he is 22. But, you forget this quickly. And, I am glad about that as I am not always the biggest fan of books with really young characters. If this is a concern for you, there is nothing to be worried about.

The chemistry is wonderful, the pull for them to be together, the attraction, is hot and you can feel it coming off the pages of your Kindle. The pacing is strong, and you don't get bogged down in the push and pull, rather it is allowed to flow smoothly and seamlessly.

I didn't like some of the extras with her mom. I think the book would have been better without it, with more of a focus on the main characters. It wasn't bad, and the other characters didn't necessarily pull me out of the story, but especially at the end when there were a lot of changes and revelations, I would have liked it to be little more about the central characters.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I do recommend it.
