A SCANDALOUS DEAL BY JOANNA SHUPE - ARC REVIEW

Joanna Shupe returns with another unforgettable novel set in the glittering world of New York City’s Gilded Age…

They call her Lady Unlucky…

With three dead fiancés, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva’s misfortune strikes once more when she discovers the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer.

Or is it Lady Irresistible?

Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable—and more alluring—than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her.

When a series of onsite “accidents” makes it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he’s willing to do anything to protect her—even if it requires A SCANDALOUS DEAL.

Eva and Phillip live in a time when a woman is not able to be respected in a "man's world" so even though her father is ailing, and not able to work,  andthe plans for Phillip's hotel were drawn by Eva, she lies and convinces everyone that she is in New York temporarily, and only in charge until her father arrives.

Phillip and Eva meet on a ship, crossing from the UK to New York.  They have an illicit encounter, and they don't see one another again...she gives him a false name and leaves while he is sleeping.

So, they are both surprised when she turns out to be the architect on his newest project...although the reader sort of sees it coming.  But, not in a bad way...as there had to be meet cute, and there had to be a reason for them to continue to stay together.

The parts of the story that are Eva and Phillip are interesting.  And, the times where they address the discrimination toward women were interesting at first, but they actually started to cause the book to drag for me.  And, it felt like the issue was addressed, and they then addressed it again...and again.  And, I am not naive, I know this is not an issue that goes away in one discussion...but, at the same time, the book is fiction and dealing with this issue caused the pace of the story itself to slow down.

I did still enjoy it, but I would have liked a little less of the plot focused on her being a woman, and attacked/disrespected/assumed incompetent...as, well, it seemed a little too much like real life for fiction that is supposed to feel like an escape.

I enjoyed this title, and I recommend it.

DISTURBING HIS PEACE BY TESSA BAILEY - ARC REVIEW

She’s got probable cause to make her move . . .

Danika Silva can’t stand Lt. Greer Burns. Her roommate’s older brother may be sexy as hell, but he’s also a cold, unfeeling robot. She just wants to graduate and forget about her scowling superior. But when a dangerous mistake lands Danika on probation—under Greer’s watch—she’s forced to interact with the big, hulking jerk. Call him daily to check in? Done. Ride shotgun in his cruiser every night? Done. Try not to climb into his giant, muscular lap and kiss him? Umm…

Greer doesn’t let anything—or anyone—distract him from the job. Except lately, all he can think about is Danika. He’s wanted the beautiful, cocky recruit since the moment he saw her. But she’s reckless and unpredictable, and Greer is painfully aware of what can happen when an officer doesn’t follow the rules. Probation seemed like a good idea, but now Danika’s scent is in his car and he’s replayed her voicemails twenty times. Christ, he’s a goner.

Danika’s melting Greer’s stone-cold exterior one ride-along at a time. Being together could have serious consequences… but breaking a few rules never hurt anybody, right?

Tessa Bailey writes hot men.  If you have read her before, you already know this.  If you haven't, and you are checking out reviews on this book before buying, let me just say...Tessa Bailey writes hot men.

But, she also writes amazing characters, and stories you are invested in, and series that you want to see how they play out because you like the characters you have met and you want to know how things work out for them.

She also doesn't write fairly tales.  It took me a while to figure out why her books feel "grittier" and I think this is why.  Life is real in her books.  People die, they have addictions, they have flaws, they aren't perfect.

Danika and Greer are academy student and instructor.  They should not be involved, for that reason...and for all of the reasons he has in his head, not the least of which is that he is her instructor and shouldn't date her.

Well, Danika tends to agree, as she overheard what Greer said about her friend Jack.  So, she doesn't like Greer...but,that doesn't have anything to do with their attraction and their chemistry.  She doesn't want to be attracted, but she is.

I liked the characters, I liked that they were flawed and that things were not perfect for them, that they felt like they were real people, with real lives, difficulties, and attractions.

As always, it was hot, sexy fun...and it was enjoyable.

I recommend this title, and all of the titles in the series.

BLOOD TYPE BY K.A. LINDE - ARC REVIEW & EBOOK GIVEAWAY

A startling new vision of paranormal romance: When a human ventures into the world of vampires—a decadent milieu of blood-bonds and betrayal—she discovers that not all is what it seems.

For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice. It’s survival.

In a civilization laid waste by poverty and desperation, Reyna accepts a high-paying position with the wealthy and hungry vampire elite. Her new job is as the live-in blood escort for the intimidating, demanding, and devilishly handsome Beckham Anderson. He’s everything she expected from a vampire, except for one thing—he won’t feed off her.

Reyna soon discovers that behind Beckham’s brooding, wicked façade lies a unique and complex man. And that, in a dark and divided world, she is more valuable than she ever would have believed.

For with each passing night, Reyna can’t shake the sensation that it’s Beckham who’s afraid of her.

Note: Reyna and Beckham’s story continues in Blood Match.

Paranormal romance is not my thing. It just isn't. If it has a werewolf, or a shifter of any type, or a fairy, I am out, thanks for asking.

Vampires, however, are not paranormal, so we are all just fine here. (Can we please just all pretend that this is true, together, just for a bit? Thanks. Appreciate it.)

Anyway, like I was saying, it's ok if you don't like paranormal, as it's just vampires...and, well, the way Kyla Linde writes them, you just don't care that it is a paranormal romance, that it seems to be set in the future (although not enough that it is really noticeable) and that some major changes have happened to the world in which we live. In ways, the way it was written reminded me a little of the way the world in The Hunger Games was set out. It's not the same, but there are some parallels with the way society has fragmented.

Beckham and Reyna are not a match made in heaven, or love. In fact, as you find out quickly, he is rather indifferent to her...and he has his reasons. Lots of them in fact. Some of them are a surprise, others are obvious and the big one? Well, let's say that I did not see it coming, but possibly because I am not one to think on the book I am reading and try to guess where it is going. That said, after I finished the title, and got to the evil, mean, awful cliffhanger at the end of the book, I can't say the revelation and the events were a surprise.

What was a surprise is how thoroughly I enjoyed this title, as it is not a sub-genre I usually connect with. I was interested in the book because I enjoy this author. I loved the book because of the characters, the plot and the story.

I recommend this title.

She opened her mouth to ask another question, but then quickly snapped it shut. Some other time.
“Was there something else?” he asked.
The few feet of distance between them felt like an eternity. He was so close and yet so far, and she felt reluctant to ask the one question she had regarding their situation. The one question she dreaded.
“I read through your schedule and didn’t see anything on there about eating,” she whispered. “I didn’t know if it was a mistake or when . . .” Her voice trailed off as she watched the hungry glint in his eye reappear. Why the hell had she brought this up again?
“Why?” he asked, taking unhurried steps toward her. “Are you so ready to give your blood to me, Little One?”
Reyna stood stark still, uncertain how to respond. She wasn’t eager. She just wanted to be prepared. But the way he was looking at her set her blood to boil. She had never been looked at like that before.
“Well?”
He was directly in front of her now, and she couldn’t hide her racing heartbeat. She had unlocked Pandora’s box. Any minute now she would feel what it was like to have a vampire take from her. She felt shaky and afraid and like she couldn’t breathe, all at once.
Beckham raised his hand and slid it through her hair. Her eyes automatically closed at the feel of his large hands taking control of her. She realized it was the first time he had actually touched her, and it made her so very aware of how powerful he truly was. This was what she always saw brimming under the surface. With the weight of it directed at her, she felt as weak as a lamb beneath his fingertips.
Slowly he ran down the curve of her neck to the vein beating fiercely against her skin. She opened her eyes and was certain fear reflected back into them. Here were her fears magnified tenfold.
His head dipped down to the soft skin. She inhaled deeply as his lips caressed the tender skin. Her eyes fluttered closed again, and all thoughts seemed to flee her mind.
This wasn’t what she had expected. Terror, stark terror. That was all she had anticipated. Not this. Whatever this was fluttering around in her stomach and heating her lower body at his nearness. Some part of her mind told her to pull away; that this was the last thing she wanted . . . she would give her blood out of necessity. She wouldn’t like it. But it was quickly silenced by the soft kisses trailing up her neck.
Then she felt it . . . a sharp prick against her neck. Her entire body shivered in anticipation of what was to come.
And then she was roughly shoved away from Beckham.
Her body collided with the wall five feet from where she had been standing. Her head cracked back against it. It wasn’t all that hard, but she could already feel a headache blossoming, and her vision went blurry for a second. Her hand went to her neck where there was the faintest trace of blood.
“What? What happened?” she asked. Fear crept back in, obliterating everything else that had just shot through her.
He was breathing heavy and refused to look at her.
“Beckham?” she whispered, using his name for the first time.
His eyes snapped to hers. “Nothing. Nothing happened,” he growled, and then stormed from the room without another word.
She was so terribly confused.

Why hadn’t he followed through? Why did she wish he had?

SCREWING THE MOB BY KRISTEN LUCIANI - EXCERPT REVEAL

When the allure of the forbidden takes a deadly turn…

Shaye

He never cared about me. He never would. He was always on the take, but this time he took too much.

I betrayed my family tonight. I lost my virginity tonight. I was ready to give it all up tonight.

I loved him, and he treated me like I was no better than the dirt on the bottom of his Louboutin loafer. Big mistake. One thought makes me smile through the hot tears streaming down my face.

I could have him killed.

Nico

I only wanted to f*ck her. I tried to convince myself that’s all it was. But I’m a damn liar. I lied to myself about how I feel, and I lied to her when I told her I wanted her to leave.

I didn’t. I wanted her…no, needed her…to stay.

Now I’m dodging calls from her maniacal brother, who, if he found out I’d so much as seen her in that sexy as hell lingerie, would wrap his beefy hands around my throat and squeeze until my eyeballs popped out of the sockets.

A shiver runs through me despite the blast of heat from the hallway floor vent that toasts my quivering legs. I reach out, my fist about half an inch from the bedroom door, poised to knock. Wait, why? He knows I’m coming. He left the front door unlocked for me. Jesus, I can’t even think straight anymore. Memories pop between my ears like bullets. Me sitting on Nico’s bed, watching a video on his iPad, Nico’s hand skimming my bare arm, Nico’s lips on mine, Nico’s tongue…

Stop!

What the hell is wrong with me? His grandfather just died, and all I can do is think about that night…the one that never should have happened, the one I continue to dream about, the one I relive every time I close my eyes.

Forget the fact that I hadn’t heard from him since.

And that he’s my brother’s best friend.

And that he has 1-800-Hoebags on speed dial.

Nico Salesi will never be mine, and I’ve come to terms with that. Kind of.

I’d hoped to accept it once I got to college, but that didn’t happen. None of the guys I’d met could hold a candle to Nico. I couldn’t find the same pools of the darkest chocolate brown that begged me to drown in them, the ones that sparkled with excitement over the release of a new Marvel super hero movie, ones that deepened with lust when they gazed at me. And I definitely couldn’t find a pair of lips as bitable, ones that tasted like a wide variety of Jolly Rancher flavors, ones I wanted plastered against my own…and then on other areas—

I grasp the cool brass doorknob in my shaking hand and twist it. The door creaks open, and I squint in the dimly lit room. His bed is in the back corner of the expansive space, and he’s sprawled out on his back, tossing a football up and down. He doesn’t look up, and that should be my first clue that he doesn’t give a flying fuck about me. I clench my fists, trying to control my disappointment.

He never called, never texted, never emailed. Not until today, and of course, I come running the second he asks. I never fail to make the wrong choices.

He doesn’t care about anything except his business dealings. He’d never let anything compromise his place in life, least of all me.

It was a kiss. I have to forget about it. It’s not why I’m here. I’m here for Grandpa Vito, not for Nico.

Maybe if I keep repeating those bullshit lies, I’ll finally convince my heart that they’re true.

I inch toward the bed, my heart thudding against my ribcage. I can feel beads of perspiration pop up along the back of my neck, a typical reaction to his presence. My stomach is twisted like a Bavarian pretzel. Good God, will I ever be able to get over this guy?

And why doesn’t he stop throwing the fucking football? He’s the one who called me.

And just like that, he makes one final catch and sits up. His eyes aren’t sparkling. They’re dark, lost, empty. Soulless. The vacant stare makes my chest tighten and I stop, uncertain about my next steps.

He slides off the bed and creeps toward me. His dark hair is tousled, like he’d just woken up from a fitful sleep. There are bags under his eyes, and his normally rosy cheeks are all but drained of color.

Tears sting my eyes when his hands grasp my shoulders. “Shaye,” he murmurs in his deep, gravelly voice.

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper. “He was such a good man, and I feel terrible for you all.”

His hands move to my hair, twisting a hot pink tendril of hair around his index finger. “You dyed your hair.”

My hand flies to the chunky streaks I’d just had added to the ends of my blonde hair. “Yeah…” I breathe him in, immediately tipsy on the scent of watermelon Jolly Ranchers.

“I like it.”

“Thanks,” I whisper.

He nods over to his desk. “He bought that for you for Christmas. It’s the collector’s edition.”

A sob rises in my throat when my eyes fall to the gift, memories of our marathon Scrabble sessions wallpapering my mind. It felt like a lifetime ago, when things were so simple and the biggest dilemma I had was to decide which word would yield me the most points during our cutthroat games. “I love it. I’ll always treasure it.”

“He missed you at Christmas. Made me promise to get it to you before you went back to school.”

“I should have gone to see him. I’ll never forgive myself for not saying goodbye.”

“Don’t beat yourself up over it. He knew the deal, Shaye.”

“I hate that it kept me away.”

“But you’re here now.”

“Yeah…” My heart is pounding like a jackhammer, drowning out all sound, and I almost miss his reply. A lump the size of a golf ball has taken up residence in my throat and squeezing out a response is near impossible.

But, as it happens, talk is overrated.

He pulls me close, bending down to press his swollen lips to mine – hot, intense, and hungry for any crumb I’m willing to drop. His strong hands fist my long hair, his kiss deepening with need. I wrap my arms around his tall, muscular frame, melting into his warmth.

My mind is screaming at me to pull away, to stop this craziness. This behavior is so unlike Nico. He never loses control or shows his hand. It’s why he’s such a valuable asset to the family.

He doesn’t really want me.

Or does he?
