king-of-Code-v4-full

King of Code by CD Reiss Publication Date: September 18th, 2017 Genre: Contemporary Romance

From New York Times Bestselling author, CD Reiss, comes a sexy tale of secrets, intrigue, betrayal, and a love worth crossing a continent for.

Taylor Harden is a man on the edge.
The edge of fame. The edge of untold wealth.
The edge of utter humiliation.
He built an unhackable system, and in front of everyone, it’s hacked.
His reputation goes from king to goat in a split second. Boom. Like that.
Some dude in Barrington, USA (AKA Nowhere) has locked down Taylor’s code, and if he doesn’t get it back, he’s going to be wearing a monkey suit for the rest of his life.
Except, this guy? This hacker from Nowhere? He’s not a guy.
Harper Watson’s all woman. And she has a plan for Taylor, his code, and his body.

Some books are hard to review because they are so different, or there is a twist or a plot point, that reviewing them gives them away.

This is one of those books. I liked Taylor...about 25% of the way into the book. And, I liked Harper by about 50% and this in and of itself made this title really interesting. generally, you like the hero and the heroine...or at least one of them because you need to in order to make the story work.

For me, at least in this title, you don't need to like them. And, well, I didn't. Did I at the end? Absolutely. Did I at the beginning? Absolutely not.

How refreshing. On her page here on Goodreads, there is a warning that none of her books are safe, and this is true here. I felt a little unsettled as I was reading this. I wasn't sure who I wanted to best the other, heck I wasn't sure if I wanted either of them to "win" at one point.

I loved the emotional push and pull not only for the characters but for the reader that exists within this one. There is no way to review without spoilers, so I am just going to say that you really should read this one, you will be glad you did.

“About time!” the older lady shouted. “Is Harper back?” I asked, handing the bags to the blushing redhead. As if summoned, Harper came through the swinging door, keeping it open so everyone could get past. She looked at me through the screen. “You coming in?” she asked. “We need to talk.” “Did the decryption key work?” The door slapped closed behind her as she came out, and we were alone. The way the setting sun hit her cheeks made her glow, and the strands of gold hair at the edges looked translucent. She belonged on a postcard. I kept forgetting she was holding me hostage. I kept forgetting I needed to think strategically. I had more at stake with this girl than I’d ever had with another. “Did you doubt it would work?” “Not really. I’m just making conversation.” “What are the thorns about?” I pointed at the thorn bed that had eaten my phone and went down the stairs to the yard. She came after me. “Don’t you have these where you’re from?” She snapped a dry twig off the end. “Roses? Yes. Impenetrable, groomed thorn bushes in our yards? No.” “It’s not normal to give the gardeners in town something to do?” We walked around the perimeter. “You are not normal.” “It still blooms in spring. It’s really nice. You should see it.” We were at the back end of the yard, where the very top of the factory’s roof cut the horizon. I took her hand, pulling her to a stop. “Harper.” “Taylor?” Her hair flew in her mouth when she turned, and she drew her finger across her cheek to get it out. What was I supposed to tell her again? That I knew we’d interviewed her. That I didn’t give her the job despite her having a leg up on everyone else we saw. But was I contrite? Accusatory? Was I just going to relay information? What did I want out of her after I told her I knew? “Thank you for helping today,” she said. “If you’d asked me when we met, ‘Would Taylor Harden help clean the factory?’ I would have said, ‘No, not for any reason.’ But there you were. Pushing a broom. Scooping up shit. Not being an asshole.” “My watch was at stake.” “Yeah. Whatever. You can say what you want to keep your reputation as a shithead intact.” “I have a reputation as a shithead?” “You know you do.” I did know it, and I reveled in it. She faced me and put her other hand out. I took it, holding both hands between us. I couldn’t help it. “Well, you guys are such a bunch of sad sacks I had to help. And let me tell you, every guy in Barrington has a little asshole in him. Trust me. I’ve played pool with them.” “I want to say…” She stopped herself as if she really didn’t want to say. “Let’s get together tonight and get you another decryption code. But… saying this is stupid.” She bit her lip. “Say it anyway.” “The sooner you get four codes, the sooner you leave.” I looked at our hands so I wouldn’t have to look at her. “I’m not sure if I want that,” she said.

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets. Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels. She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood. If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

ROCK ME BY CARLY PHILLIPS-BLOG TOUR

SBPRBanner-RockMe-BT.jpg

Rock Me, a sexy new standalone from Carly Phillips is available NOW!

CPRockMeBookCover5x8_BW_300 (2).jpg

Rock Me by Carly Phillips Publication Date: September 19th
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Bodyguard Bad Boys … Sexy, Hot, and oh so protective!

A pop star in danger.

Her reluctant bodyguard.

A past they can’t deny.

Summer Michelle is on the verge of ultimate fame.

Ben Hollander has sworn off mixing business with pleasure.

But keeping his hands off of the sexy songstress is easier said than done and once the threat is neutralized, will she choose fame over love?

Second chance romances where there is a messy past are my favorites. Let me explain, as that probably makes no sense, as by definition a second chance means there is a breakup, or a near miss, in the past for the couple.

Summer and Ben were together, and by being together were breaking the rules. They knew it, and they accepted it. And, then they got caught and Ben was blamed for what happened, he was fired, and he believed Summer was responsible for it all. But, darn it, when they meet, he still wants her...even though he is not sure he even likes her, at all, and wants to see her as just a job, and really wishes that he was anywhere else.

I love that. I love the tension, and the angst that past creates.

This didn't disappoint. Add in that it is written by Carly Phillips and the pacing is strong, overall (although a little fast at the end, I think) and you like the characters, and the connection and the sex are hot...and, well, this was an enjoyable read that I enthusiastically recommend.

Her heart was pounding hard in her chest, the thunderous live applause still echoing around her and the rush of success and pride in overcoming what could have been a disaster, had her soaring. “Did you see that?” she asked Ben. “My earpiece went dead and I nailed it anyway!” “You totally did,” he said, a huge grin on his face that let her know he understood what a huge moment this was. She squealed in excitement and threw her arms around his neck, needing to share her exhilaration. Their gazes met and locked, the air around them suddenly crackling with tension and sexual need even Ben couldn’t deny. She knew what she wanted, knew there was no better time to go about it. Her gaze fell to his mouth and she pressed her lips against his. He jerked in surprise then groaned, thrust his hand beneath her hair, holding her against him as he slid his tongue past the seam of her lips and kissed her back. He might think he wanted to keep his distance but his body was demanding they get close, his mouth gliding back and forth over hers, razor stubble bristling her cheeks in a sweet burn and his tongue delved deep. Against her stomach, she felt the hard press of his erection, causing desire to sweep over her in waves. No wonder she hadn’t found a guy she wanted to keep in her life. No one could live up to Ben. He kissed like he wanted to possess her. Own her. Keep her.

FOOL ME ONCE BY CATHERINE BYBEE-BLOG TOUR

From Weekday Brides to First Wives, a dazzling series about four women and their alliance of newfound friendship, unexpected love, and second chances.

Cynical divorce attorney Lori Cumberland lives by one motto: Love is grand, but divorce is a hundred grand. With one failed marriage under her own personal belt, Lori had fallen hard and early—and it isn’t something she plans on repeating. She’s content focusing on the temporary marriages of her rich and famous clients. When she joins some of her recent divorcĂ©es on a celebratory cruise, her only vow is fun, sun, and new friends. But Lori finds herself tempted by a jury of one.

For Reed Barlow, falling into the world of private investigation was easy. He knows the law and knows how to avoid breaking it—all while doing his job. His rule to live by? No emotion, no involvement…until Lori. His charming smile and cocky attitude distracts Lori and lowers her guard, which is exactly what Reed desires.

But what appears as a one-time-only flirtation may be a plot orchestrated by Reed. As he’s taking his investigation to a dangerous level, it’s Lori who could end up in jeopardy. Reed has only one shot for Lori to grant him a second chance. But if he comes clean with her, he blows his cover. And that just might cost him the opportunity for an alliance of family…and of love.

The premise of this book is really interesting. A divorce attorney who is involved in working out the divorces of the people who she helps by assisting with the legalities of their arranged marriages. I love that the heroine in the story is a part of the world that helps marriages end. In the acknowledgements, Ms. Bybee mentions that she has been through a divorce herself, and that the emotions are rough, even when it is wanted...and the perspective of the author in this book gave it a different feel than other books I have read where the heroine is divorced.

Lori and Reed meet on a cruise ship and start a vacation fling, but then discoverer that there's a lot more than just the vacation between them...but he is not being honest.

My favorite thing about Bybee's stories is how human her characters are...they react the way people do. And, they seem real...there's something about the way she writes them that makes them feel authentic and truthful. That, in addition to the romance, is why I enjoyed this book.

As with other books that function as the first in a series, there was a lot of build up of the secondary characters and this did pull some of the focus from Lori and Reed. Not a lot, but enough that it felt, in places, that there was a little too much of the secondary characters.

I do recommend this tile and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

TURNING UP THE HEAT BY ERIKA WILDE-REVIEW

A sexy stand-alone, full-length novel!

Radio personality Kerri McCree really likes sex. Talking about sex, that is . . .

Kerri knows firsthand that you can hide a lot behind a microphone. Although she's earned a reputation for discussing every aspect of sex on her show, she's never had to back it up . . . until a sexy mystery caller proves to be even more irresistible in person.

Ian Carlisle is immediately intrigued by the sultry voice he hears on the late night radio show, and it doesn't take him long to arouse Kerri's imagination with his dirty talk. Now he's turning up the heat and seducing the rest of her. Their on-the-air chemistry sizzles and they heat up the airwaves, debating any and all provocative issues possible. As the ratings soar, so does the sexual tension.

But will Ian do when he discovers Kerri's not the sex expert she professes to be?

Originally published as Heat Wave under the name Janelle Denison

This is a re-issue of a book written a few years ago, and it is done very well and seems modern, like it was written in 2017. But at the same time, kind of like a movie that was filmed in the 80s feels like a movie from that decade, this one felt like this too. There was a retro feeling about the situations and the feeling of the book that I enjoyed.

I liked Ian and Kerri and I loved the idea of the attraction between them being explored over the radio before there was an in person relationship. The exploration of the attraction of what worked for each of them and how things could be with them, and the idea that this was all explored without in-person contact gave the reader a kinship with the characters, and I think this made the title relateable.

There was a lot going on with the secondary characters, and at times I thought there was a little too much and the scenes felt a little long, but at the same time, I felt that the relationship with Ian and Kerri was developed.

I loved the ending. Was it a little predictable? Yeah, it was. But it was also important that it ended that way and it worked...as it was the way I think it would have progressed if they were real people. And, when I can believe the characters are real, I am definitely more engaged with the book.

I recommend this title.
