Aidan, Lexi, and Lucas had a night of passion, and a strong connection. But, it was too much for Aidan, and he left.

Years later, he's back, the connection is still there, and so is the passion.

Second chance romance is like catnip for me...and having more than one romance to rekindle made this one of my favorite (if not my favorite) of the series so far. There is just something that immediately draws you in with a second chance, the knowing that there is going to be enough of a connection that there is still hurt their, or joy at seeing the other person again, or fear that they will leave again.

Add in the fact that this book was hot, with steamy sexy times that were not only scorching, but emotional, and this was one of my favorites of the series.

I recommend this title.

Lexi realized she was in serious trouble the minute the words left Lucas’s mouth. Hell, she’d realized she was in trouble the minute she opened her mouth. What was she thinking? She knew damn well how to behave in a dungeon, but something about this Master made her want to push him. Damn it. She’d been this way all of her life. She had to push. She thought about taking a step back, but before she could make her feet move, Master A had her in a fireman’s hold. “Hey!” She shouted as her world upended. She turned her head up to throw a desperate look Lucas’s way. Lucas stood there, a stony cold look on his face. In that moment, he was all Dom, and she’d never seen him look hotter. There was a confidence about him she had rarely seen when he was around her. Lucas was utterly in command at work, but his surety faltered when she walked into the room. Even when he performed a scene with her, she knew he worried about her comfort. He didn’t look worried now. He looked ready. Her heart started to pound as Master A turned, and she lost sight of Lucas. “I need a chair, Lucas.” The words came out of the Master’s mouth like a judge delivering a sentence. “Yes, Sir.” Lucas’s words were silky smooth. There was not a hint of hesitation now. She could hear him moving to do Master A’s bidding. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked, though she was a bit less hostile now. She’d fucked up. She was glad Julian wasn’t around to witness it, though Leo would probably tell him. Tears pricked her eyes. Damn, she was proving to Leo she couldn’t handle the lifestyle. “Look, Sir, I’m sorry. It was wrong of me to be rude to you, but I was merely pointing out that Lucas and I had a plan for tonight.” Reason. She could reason with him, surely. It worked on all the men in her life. Of course, usually she was looking at them instead of trying to plead her case to a group of back muscles. The muscles were unbelievably tight, but his skin—oh, his skin had been decimated in his lower back. It was a mess of white, puckered flesh, and she could see both neat, surgical lines, and jagged edges. She reached out to touch the mass of scars, but she was jerked back over his shoulder and set on her feet before she could make it. She wobbled on her heels, but Master A’s big hands held her shoulders. “I don’t think you understand how this is going to go, sub. I am the Master, and you are the one being punished. I won’t put up with a spoiled princess telling me how her punishment will go. It will go the way I say it will go. First, you will pay for the insult to me, and then we’ll proceed to the sawhorse.” “I don’t like the sawhorse.” The words came out breathy and small, because she was beginning to understand that this was serious. Master A didn’t look like he was planning on giving in. And she hated being called a spoiled princess, but a part of her worried that he was right. The last few years, she’d allowed herself to become spoiled and dependent. She’d fled from everything that hurt her. She’d hidden. She’d let her stepfathers and Lucas coddle and provide for her so she didn’t have to face the truth. Master A didn’t flinch. “I don’t care. Lucas has done the best he can, but the truth is he wasn’t trained to be a Dom. He might enjoy it from time to time, but he prefers bottoming. You require a firm hand. If you don’t want it, then you’re free to leave. No one is holding you against your will. This is all about consensual play, so you have to make the choice. Do you want the session to continue?” She hated this part. This was the part that she’d never understood. She had to make the choice, and she couldn’t put it off on anyone else. She wanted for him to simply do it. Then she could blame him later, but that wasn’t what The Club was about. She’d been coming here for over a year, and she finally had to decide to make the choice—stay and put herself in the hands of a stranger, or go and never know what it was like. And then there was the fact that Master A was right. Lucas needed something she couldn’t give him. She cast her eyes down submissively. How bad could it be? “Yes, Sir.” “Then strip.”

FREED-AN

Juliette is the sheltered sister, the one who grew up without knowing about her sisters, and having no idea that her mother was alive. She's the sister who is missing, and is mentioned in the other books.

Braden was hired by Juliette's father to make sure she stays safe, and, it's an easy job as he wants to stay as close to Juliette as he possibly can and spending time with her, making sure she is ok, is not an issue at all.

As their relationship develops, Juliette believes that she is forming a real relationship and Braden starts to worry about the secret he is keeping, that he was hired by her father.

I liked that this bothered him, and that he really didn't act on it. Yes, she finds out (this is not a spoiler, I think it's a given that she was going to) but I liked the way it was handled and I believed the reactions of the people involved and the way Braden handled it.

Carly Phillips tells a story you enjoy, with characters who are interesting and, most importantly, characters that you like. You want things to work out for them. The writing was strong, and you believe the characters and their actions. The plot was mostly strong, although there was an area that I wanted to see more focus on. In this one, I do think it was a little shorter than I wanted it to be, there was more of the sisters backstory that I wanted to see. It didn't make the book bad, and I still enjoyed it...but I wanted more of their relationship.

Overall, I enjoyed this title, and I recommend it.

Excerpt:

“You have a customer. First booth.” Grace tipped her head toward the front of the restaurant. ““And he’s a cute one. Single, too,” Grace said with a wink.
“So this is what small-town living is like? You know everyone?”
She nodded. “And everyone gets to know you. Now shoo.” She waggled her fingers, indicating Juliette should head up front and serve her customer.
She put a smile on her face and strode toward the first table, stopping short when she came upon him.
He had thick, brown wavy hair, with a strong jaw and hazel eyes, and Grace hadn’t done him justice calling him cute. He was downright gorgeous. A navy tee shirt accented his muscular frame. He had to work out, given the flex and pull of his biceps as he picked up a glass of water and took a long sip.
The men she knew in New York were flimsy compared to this hunky specimen. They wore suits their bodies didn’t fill out and had weak facial profiles. This guy was everything she didn’t know to want, but she was certain he’d be in her dreams from now on.
She swallowed hard and approached, gripping the coffeepot in her hand. “Good morning.”
He looked up and his eyes locked on hers. His mossy-green-brown gaze bored into hers and held on so long the stare felt like a warm caress.
“Good morning to you, pretty lady.”
At his gruff words, a warm flush rose to her cheeks. “Coffee?” she asked, lifting the carafe, her hand suddenly trembling.
“Sure. Thank you.”
She somehow managed to pour the liquid without spilling, but she filled the coffee too high and it seeped over the top, leaking first on the table and then onto his lap.
He jerked as the hot liquid hit his pants.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She put the carafe down with a clatter, picked up the nearest napkin, and began blotting his shirt and his lap, pressing down to soak up the liquid, only to come into contact with his hard, thick– “Oh!” She yanked her hand back, further mortified.
“You could keep going,” he said, eyes twinkling with laughter.
She wanted to crawl beneath the nearest table and stay there. “I’m so sorry. Did it burn you?” she asked, her cheeks flaming.
“No. It must have been cooler than you realized. I’m fine. Really.”
“Is everything okay over here?” Grace asked, walking over, obviously concerned.
Juliette stepped up, taking responsibility. “I–“
“Just a little accident,” the man said. “It’s no big deal.”
A customer called Grace’s name and she walked away, the incident forgotten. Juliette wished she could put it behind her as easily.
“How about we introduce ourselves, considering you had your hand on my–“
“Juliette,” she said quickly, before he could finish his sentence. “Juliette Collins.”
“Braden Clark,” he said with a knowing grin that made her weak in the knees.
The man’s impact was potent.
“Nice to meet you, Juliette.”
“Same,” she murmured. “Now can I get you a fresh cup of coffee?”
“That would be great.”
She gently picked up the overflowed cup and headed for the kitchen, returning to him with an empty mug and a towel to clean the table. A few careful minutes of serving later, he had his coffee and she was back to her duties, feeling his gaze on her as she worked. His name is Braden Clark and he’s a regular.”
Juliette picked up the coffee carafe. “I’ve got it.”

OFF THE GRID BY MONICA MCCARTY- ARC REVIEW

A hunt for dangerous secrets leads to explosive chemistry in this exhilarating romantic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Going Dark.

A team of Navy SEALs go on a mission and disappear without a trace--they are The Lost Platoon.

Investigative reporter Brittany Blake may have stumbled upon the story of a lifetime in her search for her missing brother. When he seemingly disappears overnight, she refuses to accept the Navy's less-than-satisfying explanation. She begins her own investigation, which leads her to top-secret SEAL teams, covert ops, and a possible cover up...

John Donovan is having trouble biding his time, waiting for his Commanding Officer to figure out who set up their platoon. John's best friend and BUD/S partner, Brandon Blake, was one of the many lives tragically lost in the attack against his team. When Brandon's sister, Brittany, tracks John down, looking for answers, he realizes that she may be their best bet--or bait--for finding out who is targeting SEAL Team Nine.

In order for a romantic suspense to work, you have to believe that the connection is strong enough for the characters to be able to form a connection while, sometimes literally, being chased by people who are shooting at them.

Brittany and John have this past connection, and a bit of a forbidden relationship as her brother warned John away from him years ago...but, part of the reason they are together now is that her brother has been killed, and Brittany is determined to find out why...even at the cost of the safety of the men who lived through the same mission and are in hiding.

I believed the romantic aspect of this book, and I also believed the suspense.  All of the elements were there for me to be willing to accept that both were happening simultaneously.  There were a couple of places where I felt it dragged a little, and there was a subplot that worked and felt unnecessary at the same time, but I enjoyed it overall.

I recommend this title.

I THINK I LOVE YOU BY LAUREN LAYNE - REVIEW

A game of seduction between two best friends goes deliciously wrong in an irresistible Oxford Novel that brims with wit and sexual tension. Library Journal hails Layne’s work as “exemplary contemporary romance.”

Brit Robbins knows that dating in New York City is hard—she just hoped to have it mastered by age thirty. But after yet another promising suitor says they have no sparks, Brit decides it’s time to torch her dating game and try a new plan. And who better to coach Brit through the art of seduction than the guy who first gave her the “let’s be friends” card?

Hunter Cross has always figured there’s nothing his best friend Brit can do to surprise him. But Brit’s request is a surprise he doesn’t see coming—and one he’s definitely not prepared for. Hunter and Brit have always been careful to keep things perfectly platonic, but the fake dates and faux flirting are starting to feel like the real deal. And soon Hunter realizes he has taught Brit too well. Not only has she become an expert at seduction, the man becoming thoroughly seduced is him.

This book is the last of the Stiletto and Oxford series and, for just a minute, I need to be sad.

Not that the book was bad, as it definitely wasn't...but at the end, I felt like I was saying goodbye to friends who had been with me in my reading world for a long time. And, well, I am just a little sad. The ending was happy, and I was crying. How does that work? Why am I crying at the happy scene? I think it's because I feel like I know these people, and I was invested in the magazine and the people who worked there, luckily without any fraternization policies.

Lauren Layne is a go to author for me. She has been since I read my very first title by her, After the Kiss and The Trouble With Love is one of the 23 titles I have listed as all time favorite books. So, letting go of this series is...difficult. There's a lot of my reading history in this, and these books are also those I have shared with friends, with my mom, and recommended to other readers as a series you will just plain love.

But, as she says in the notes at the end, the beauty of a book is that it can be read again and again, and like the song says, it will be there for you, even when it hasn't been your day, week, month, or year.

That helped. A little.

It also helped that Brit and Hunter's story was darn good..perfection, really. It was compelling, and it also felt like there was some movement in the Oxford and Stiletto world, with Hunter making a decision at the end, one that you see coming, that changed the dynamic of the office and not just the dynamic of his relationship with Brit.

I could say so much about this book. About how well it is written, about how much I connected with the characters, about how much I loved it. But, really, I think the fact that I was so connected that I was crying at the happy parts...well, that says it all about how good this book is, and how strong my connection was to the characters.

I recommend this book, and this series.
