Rock Me by Carly Phillips Publication Date: September 19th
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Bodyguard Bad Boys … Sexy, Hot, and oh so protective!

A pop star in danger.

Her reluctant bodyguard.

A past they can’t deny.

Summer Michelle is on the verge of ultimate fame.

Ben Hollander has sworn off mixing business with pleasure.

But keeping his hands off of the sexy songstress is easier said than done and once the threat is neutralized, will she choose fame over love?

Second chance romances where there is a messy past are my favorites. Let me explain, as that probably makes no sense, as by definition a second chance means there is a breakup, or a near miss, in the past for the couple.

Summer and Ben were together, and by being together were breaking the rules. They knew it, and they accepted it. And, then they got caught and Ben was blamed for what happened, he was fired, and he believed Summer was responsible for it all. But, darn it, when they meet, he still wants her...even though he is not sure he even likes her, at all, and wants to see her as just a job, and really wishes that he was anywhere else.

I love that. I love the tension, and the angst that past creates.

This didn't disappoint. Add in that it is written by Carly Phillips and the pacing is strong, overall (although a little fast at the end, I think) and you like the characters, and the connection and the sex are hot...and, well, this was an enjoyable read that I enthusiastically recommend.

Her heart was pounding hard in her chest, the thunderous live applause still echoing around her and the rush of success and pride in overcoming what could have been a disaster, had her soaring. “Did you see that?” she asked Ben. “My earpiece went dead and I nailed it anyway!” “You totally did,” he said, a huge grin on his face that let her know he understood what a huge moment this was. She squealed in excitement and threw her arms around his neck, needing to share her exhilaration. Their gazes met and locked, the air around them suddenly crackling with tension and sexual need even Ben couldn’t deny. She knew what she wanted, knew there was no better time to go about it. Her gaze fell to his mouth and she pressed her lips against his. He jerked in surprise then groaned, thrust his hand beneath her hair, holding her against him as he slid his tongue past the seam of her lips and kissed her back. He might think he wanted to keep his distance but his body was demanding they get close, his mouth gliding back and forth over hers, razor stubble bristling her cheeks in a sweet burn and his tongue delved deep. Against her stomach, she felt the hard press of his erection, causing desire to sweep over her in waves. No wonder she hadn’t found a guy she wanted to keep in her life. No one could live up to Ben. He kissed like he wanted to possess her. Own her. Keep her.

FOOL ME ONCE BY CATHERINE BYBEE-BLOG TOUR

From Weekday Brides to First Wives, a dazzling series about four women and their alliance of newfound friendship, unexpected love, and second chances.

Cynical divorce attorney Lori Cumberland lives by one motto: Love is grand, but divorce is a hundred grand. With one failed marriage under her own personal belt, Lori had fallen hard and early—and it isn’t something she plans on repeating. She’s content focusing on the temporary marriages of her rich and famous clients. When she joins some of her recent divorcĂ©es on a celebratory cruise, her only vow is fun, sun, and new friends. But Lori finds herself tempted by a jury of one.

For Reed Barlow, falling into the world of private investigation was easy. He knows the law and knows how to avoid breaking it—all while doing his job. His rule to live by? No emotion, no involvement…until Lori. His charming smile and cocky attitude distracts Lori and lowers her guard, which is exactly what Reed desires.

But what appears as a one-time-only flirtation may be a plot orchestrated by Reed. As he’s taking his investigation to a dangerous level, it’s Lori who could end up in jeopardy. Reed has only one shot for Lori to grant him a second chance. But if he comes clean with her, he blows his cover. And that just might cost him the opportunity for an alliance of family…and of love.

The premise of this book is really interesting. A divorce attorney who is involved in working out the divorces of the people who she helps by assisting with the legalities of their arranged marriages. I love that the heroine in the story is a part of the world that helps marriages end. In the acknowledgements, Ms. Bybee mentions that she has been through a divorce herself, and that the emotions are rough, even when it is wanted...and the perspective of the author in this book gave it a different feel than other books I have read where the heroine is divorced.

Lori and Reed meet on a cruise ship and start a vacation fling, but then discoverer that there's a lot more than just the vacation between them...but he is not being honest.

My favorite thing about Bybee's stories is how human her characters are...they react the way people do. And, they seem real...there's something about the way she writes them that makes them feel authentic and truthful. That, in addition to the romance, is why I enjoyed this book.

As with other books that function as the first in a series, there was a lot of build up of the secondary characters and this did pull some of the focus from Lori and Reed. Not a lot, but enough that it felt, in places, that there was a little too much of the secondary characters.

I do recommend this tile and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

TURNING UP THE HEAT BY ERIKA WILDE-REVIEW

A sexy stand-alone, full-length novel!

Radio personality Kerri McCree really likes sex. Talking about sex, that is . . .

Kerri knows firsthand that you can hide a lot behind a microphone. Although she's earned a reputation for discussing every aspect of sex on her show, she's never had to back it up . . . until a sexy mystery caller proves to be even more irresistible in person.

Ian Carlisle is immediately intrigued by the sultry voice he hears on the late night radio show, and it doesn't take him long to arouse Kerri's imagination with his dirty talk. Now he's turning up the heat and seducing the rest of her. Their on-the-air chemistry sizzles and they heat up the airwaves, debating any and all provocative issues possible. As the ratings soar, so does the sexual tension.

But will Ian do when he discovers Kerri's not the sex expert she professes to be?

Originally published as Heat Wave under the name Janelle Denison

This is a re-issue of a book written a few years ago, and it is done very well and seems modern, like it was written in 2017. But at the same time, kind of like a movie that was filmed in the 80s feels like a movie from that decade, this one felt like this too. There was a retro feeling about the situations and the feeling of the book that I enjoyed.

I liked Ian and Kerri and I loved the idea of the attraction between them being explored over the radio before there was an in person relationship. The exploration of the attraction of what worked for each of them and how things could be with them, and the idea that this was all explored without in-person contact gave the reader a kinship with the characters, and I think this made the title relateable.

There was a lot going on with the secondary characters, and at times I thought there was a little too much and the scenes felt a little long, but at the same time, I felt that the relationship with Ian and Kerri was developed.

I loved the ending. Was it a little predictable? Yeah, it was. But it was also important that it ended that way and it worked...as it was the way I think it would have progressed if they were real people. And, when I can believe the characters are real, I am definitely more engaged with the book.

I recommend this title.

WICKED DIRTY BY J. KENNER-REVIEW AND EXCERPT TOUR

Sometimes bad isn’t good enough…

On the outside, Lyle Tarpin is a clean-cut Hollywood actor whose star is on the rise. Inside, he’s battling his own demons, shunning relationships and finding solace in the arms of a string of anonymous women paid very well for their discretion.

But when he’s photographed in a compromising position by an over-eager reporter, the only way to save his career is to say that the woman he was with is his fiancĂ©e. And now Lyle has to play a very public game with the only woman who’s ever managed to get under his skin.

Struggling waitress Sugar Laine agrees to spend one night with Lyle—but only because she’s desperate to save her family home. She never expects that a night of passion will turn into a pretend engagement … or that the heat between them will blossom into love.

But sometimes love has a price.

And now the only question is—can Lyle and Sugar afford to pay it?

I love J. Kenner's writing.  I get excited to see when she has a new release, knowing I'm going to be sucked into a great story.  Wicked Dirty was no different.  This book had passion, heat and romance and interesting, compelling characters with a story to tell.

I loved Sugar Laine.  She's in a position nobody ever wants to be in, and is determined to make things work.  Does she love the decision she's made?  Not necessarily.  But she knows what she needs to do and isn't afraid to do it.

Lyle is such a Hollywood heartthrob.  Or at least what I envision a Hollywood heartthrob to be.  Hot, sexy, swoony.  He has issues-clearly-and getting to the root of them made this a compelling read for me.  I wanted to ease his pain.  I wanted him to be happy.

I love a good fake romance trope story.  Seeing the fake turn real, watching the emotions develop always leaves me satisfied.  The author did a great job with that type of storyline here.  The chemistry is there between these two, so seeing them blur the lines between fake and real was believable and interesting.  I liked seeing them truly discover each other, not just through sex, but through letting each other in.

This is book two in Ms. Kenner's Stark World but can be read as a standalone.  This book sucked me in from the beginning with it's crisp writing, unique plot development and characters.  I truly cheered for Laine and Lyle, wanting to see that romance bloom.  I absolutely would recommend this title and look forward to the next from this author.

I love the darker romances. And, really what is darker than the hero, Lyle, meeting the heroine, Sugar, when she shows up at his hotel room, intending to have sex with him for money? Not much.

Right at that moment, I was hooked. I love the idea of a woman using what she has to solve an issue, and the moral questions that brings...is it ok? Is it not? Is it a personal decision? And, if there is a connection with the person you are hired to be with, is that something that you can pursue?

So much was going on in this book, and all of it was done well. The development of the relationship, the romance, the connection that develops between Sugar and Lyle is so interesting, with both of them so focused on doing what they need, and trying to overcome things that they can't change.

I thought the movement of the story was interesting. The push and pull of the romantic attraction juxtaposed with how they met, his past with hiring women, and who she was. And, when the 2 sides of him collide, as they inevitably do, the fallout and the direction it pushes them is interesting. Hard to discuss without specifics, but interesting and compelling.

The writing and the pacing were both strong with this, and the characters interesting. I recommend the book and I am looking forward to the next one in the Stark World.

My blood pounds through my body, my heart beating so hard that I can feel the pressure not only against my ribs, but against the wall behind me. My lips are parted, my breath coming in shaky gasps. He’s only inches away, so close I could reach out and touch that famous, gorgeous face. His eyes, as deep and blue as the summer sky, roam over me. He eases closer, moving slowly, his face reflecting a hunger that sends shivers through me. Once again, my mind conjures the image of a hungry wolf. Only now I’m thinking that maybe getting eaten wouldn’t be so bad after all. Besides, I’m here. Might as well enjoy it. Then, of course, I remember exactly what it is. Oh, God. His fingertip brushes my forehead, and I almost jump out of my skin. I meet his eyes, see something that looks like irritation, and want to kick myself. I need to focus, dammit. “You were somewhere else.” He speaks flatly, as if he’s working to keep all emotion out. I shake my head, conjuring a lie. “I’m right here.” And then, because I’ve seen movies with call girls, I put my hand flat on his chest, trying to seem seductive. He’s wearing a gray T-shirt, and I can feel his heart beating beneath the planes of his muscled chest. I read somewhere that he was getting in shape to play a superhero in an upcoming movie. And kudos to whoever’s orchestrating that transformation, because this guy is rock solid. He’s still looking at me, and I fist my hand in the material of his shirt, needing an anchor against the storm of emotion I see playing out on his face. Desire. Hunger. Longing. Regret. And pain. I see so much damn pain that I have to fight the urge to cup my palm against his cheek and tell him that whatever it is, it’s going to be okay. Instead, I simply whisper, “Lyle?” I’m not sure if it was the wrong thing or the right thing to say, but I know that it was unexpected. And before I can apologize or cover or say anything else at all, he is on me. One hand at my throat, the other hard on my breast. I’m pinned against the wall, helpless, as he claims my mouth again. Wildly. Brutally. I try to think what I’m supposed to do—try to respond. But I’m trapped. I’m not Sugar. I’m not Laine. I’m not anyone. This isn’t about sex. It’s about pain and need and that storm of horrors I saw on his face. I might as well not even be here. And as his hand squeezes tight on my breast—as his mouth clashes so hard against mine that he draws blood—my only thought is that I shouldn’t have come at all. That this was stupid. Foolish. And that this night is going to leave me scarred. I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to be what he wants. A warm body. An anonymous female. But I can’t do it. I can’t do it at all. All I can be is me. A woman desperate enough to have sex for money. A girl trying anything and everything to save her house. To protect her family’s memory. I can be that girl. But I can’t be nothing. I can’t be no one. And as his hand tightens in my hair—as he kisses me violently—as his body presses hard against mine and I feel the steel of his erection—I know that I’ve made a terrible, horrible, awful mistake. Stop!
