Untouchable by Jayne Ann Krentz - ARC Review

A man's quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Promise Not to Tell.

Quinton Zane is back.

Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer's head has garnered him a reputation in some circles--and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.

But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family's hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas's foster sons, starting with Jack.

Jayne Ann Krentz is one of those authors I know I am going to enjoy.  I don't need the blurb, or the cover, or even an idea as to who the book will feature to know that I am going to want to read it.

Jack and Winter's story is no different.  I enjoyed it, I liked the characters, I liked the resolution of the story of the boys rescued from the cult.  And, I loved the quirky nature of the characters.

I think, of all of the things I like about this author, the quirkiness of the characters is what I love the most.  They are nerds, or a little awkward, or a little unsure of themselves, so they are even more approachable as characters, and they draw you in.

Telling too much about what happens in this one is a little spoiler-y, so I am going to say I enjoyed this, the characters, the appearance of one of my favorite characters who has been in other books...and I just appreciated the enjoyment of the story of this book.

I recommend this title.

PROMISE NOT TO TELL BY JAYNE ANN KRENTZ - ARC REVIEW

A painter of fiery, nightmarish visions throws herself into the sea—but she leaves her secrets behind . . .

Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy has spent years battling the demons that stem from her childhood time in a cult and the night a fire burned through the compound, killing her mother. And now one of her artists has taken her own life, but not before sending Virginia a last picture: a painting that makes Virginia doubt everything about the so-called suicide—and her own past.

Like Virginia, private investigator Cabot Sutter was one of the children in the cult who survived that fire... and only he can help her now. As they struggle to unravel the clues in the painting, it becomes clear that someone thinks Virginia knows more than she does and that she must be stopped. Thrown into an inferno of desire and deception, Virginia and Cabot draw ever closer to the mystery of their shared memories—and the shocking fate of the one man who still wields the power to destroy everything they hold dear.

If you have read Jayne Ann Krentz, you have a pretty good idea what to expect from one of her titles.  You are going to get interesting, charmingly quirky characters who seem all the more human for their faults and eccentricities.  The writing will be sharp, the pacing will be quick.  The mystery will move quickly and will end up drawing people into the mix who seemed to only be on the periphery.  The pacing will be strong and the book will be enjoyable.

All of this is present in the story of Virginia and Cabot.  And, really, I am not sure what else I can say about this book without giving things away.  The issue, from a review standpoint anyway, of a book that is this well constructed is that it is impossible to review.

I could talk about the characters, and the plot, and I could ruin it for everyone else.

So, I am going to keep this short and say that I enjoyed this book.  A lot.  And that I highly recommend it.
