Eliza and the Duke was exactly what I wanted from a historical novel by JEM.
It was full of fantastic characters, settings, and people that you want to see happy who feel like they could be people you meet in real life.
The Duke is just like all of the characters she writes, he's compelling and interesting. He has a backstory that you want to learn, and you want to see him happy. Eliza is also one of those characters that draws you in immediately. You want to know what moves her, what excites her, and what she wants.
Through the story, you find out all of this about both of them.
It's a little lighter, I think, than some other works by this author. But, that doesn't make it a bad thing. It's a historical, so I think that lends itself to being a lighter story...not that JEM couldn't write a dark and twisty historical novel...but a historical just works for me in as a little bit lighter.
There are other people, including Eliza's siblings, who live in the area...I hope there are also plenty of other titles in the series.
I enjoyed and recommend this title.
