Charmed by Lexi Blake - ARC Review

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake comes a new story in her Masters and Mercenaries series…

JT Malone is lucky, and he knows it. He is the heir to a billion-dollar petroleum empire, and he has a loving family. Between his good looks and his charm, he can have almost any woman he wants. The world is his oyster, and he really likes oysters. So why does it all feel so empty?

Nina Blunt is pretty sure she’s cursed. She worked her way up through the ranks at Interpol, fighting for every step with hard work and discipline. Then she lost it all because she loved the wrong person. Rebuilding her career with McKay-Taggart, she can’t help but feel lonely. It seems everyone around her is finding love and starting families. But she knows that isn’t for her. She has vowed never to make the mistake of falling in love again.

JT comes to McKay-Taggart for assistance rooting out a corporate spy, and Nina signs on to the job. Their working relationship becomes tricky, however, as their personal chemistry flares like a wildfire. Completing the assignment without giving in to the attraction that threatens to overwhelm them seems like it might be the most difficult part of the job. When danger strikes, will they be able to count on each other when the bullets are flying? If not, JT’s charmed life might just come to an end.

ONE TO KEEP BY LEXI BLAKE-RELEASE DAY BLITZ

Stefan Talbot likes order and control. He approaches his life with the same meticulous precision that he uses to put paint on his canvas. Nothing good comes from chaos, and that is why he has refused to allow himself to get close to Jennifer Waters. They are like fire and ice. Though she is younger, her talent as an artist is unquestionable. But she lives her life like she paints—with wild, passionate abandon. It is intoxicating and terrifying, and he can’t get her out of his head.

Jennifer ran from Bliss to put Stef behind her. She had come to the mountain town seeking a mentor but found much more than she bargained for. Cool and distant, Stef was like a marble statue and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t break through his shell. She moved to Dallas to start over, but nothing is going as planned. When the art gallery where she works is robbed and a precious painting is stolen, Jen is accused of the theft. Jen is thrilled when her bail is met, until she realizes her savior is Stef and he has a few conditions. First and foremost, she has to return to Bliss.

Against the backdrop of the Winter Festival, Stef and Jen’s attraction catches fire. But the dark forces behind the robbery in Dallas have followed Jen home. A criminal syndicate believes she still has the stolen painting and they’ll kill to get their hands on it.

What do art thefts, small towns, and controlling Dom's have in common?

More than you'd think, actually.

Stef and Jennifer have a past. One that she ran from, and he let her, because of her age. But, when she needs him, when her world seems to fall apart, there's nowhere else he'd think of being than with her.

I can't say I totally loved Stefan. He's a little controlling, even for a Dom, and there were parts that had me thinking it might be a little much, that he was over the top. But, it worked. And, more importantly it worked for the characters in the story, so I was able to move past that and enjoy this title.

I recommend this latest in the Bliss Colorado series of titles.

 * * * * Stef turned back to Jen. “Let’s move, Jennifer. I have a plane ready. We need to be at Love Field in an hour. I have an officer waiting to process you out.” Jen’s head whirled. “Plane?” “Yes, plane. We’re going back to Bliss.” “No way.” Cool, gray eyes slitted, and she could practically feel the will rolling off him. Stef was tense, and she knew it was a bad idea to push him, but she couldn’t help it. “I’m serious, Stef. I’m not going anywhere with you.” She couldn’t go back to Bliss. Panic threatened to swamp her. He was here. He was right here in front of her, and her heart didn’t give a damn that he was a bastard. For the first time in months, she felt desire for something besides her art. She couldn’t, wouldn’t, go down that path again. He got into her space, a move he’d perfected seemingly long before he met her. She held her ground. Even though he didn’t touch her physically, he seemed to surround her. Suddenly her whole world was Stef, his gray eyes, the heat of his body, his masculine, clean scent. He filled her every sense. “I’m not going home with you.” She forced herself to say the words. His lips hitched up. “At least you admit Bliss is your home.” That wasn’t what she’d meant. Bliss, Colorado, had felt like home when she’d been there, but she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bliss wasn’t big enough for the two of them. “It’s your home. Hell, Stef, it’s your little kingdom, and you like to play the king, don’t you?” “Yes, because everyone does what I say.” Stef’s low growl made her breath speed up. “Everyone in Bliss bows down to me. Have you been gone for so long that you forget Max regularly kicks my ass? And Nell and Henry are currently protesting my gardening practices.” He was too close for comfort. She gave in and took a step back. She could see plainly that he was satisfied with her discomfort. “Don’t try to play the poor rich boy with me. You’re a puppet master. You like to pull the strings and see how people dance. Well, I’m not in your kingdom anymore, and there’s no way you can get me there again. So you can take your money and go back to Colorado.” It was stupid. Even as she said the words, she wanted to take them back. She’d spent the last twenty-four hours terrified in a jail cell. She would have to be the stupidest woman in the world to turn him down, but she’d never thought around Stef. Since the moment she’d met him, she’d been a quivering mass of emotion and desire every time he entered a room. “Stubborn thing. I’ll make it easy on you.” His hands caught hers, and before she could think she felt cold metal surrounding her wrists. He flicked the cuffs on with the cool precision of a man who often cuffed the women in his life. “What are you doing?” She stared at her hands. At least this time they were in front of her. She preferred it that way. Damn, her life had taken a wrong turn when she could compare and contrast her experiences with men who handcuffed her. “Taking you home, Jennifer. Whether you like it or not.” He leaned down and picked her up. She was in his arms, nestled close to his chest. She looked up at the square, inflexible line of his jaw. His arms tightened around her, and she was caged more closely than she’d been in the holding cell. She had the suspicion that this time Stef would be harder to escape from than before. He kicked open the door and started down the hall. Yep, like it or not, she was going back to Bliss.

Wade and Geneva are a second chance with a reason for the split that was not in their control. I love stories that start like this with the connection being there but not something they are willing to act on.

Insert a need for a bodyguard, an angry ex, and a child, and you have a compelling story with characters you enjoy.

Lexi Blake doesn't disappoint. As always with her stories, its interesting, well written and full of characters you love and those you are glad to see again.

So fun to revisit these characters and to spend a little more time with Ian and the gang.

Aidan, Lexi, and Lucas had a night of passion, and a strong connection. But, it was too much for Aidan, and he left.

Years later, he's back, the connection is still there, and so is the passion.

Second chance romance is like catnip for me...and having more than one romance to rekindle made this one of my favorite (if not my favorite) of the series so far. There is just something that immediately draws you in with a second chance, the knowing that there is going to be enough of a connection that there is still hurt their, or joy at seeing the other person again, or fear that they will leave again.

Add in the fact that this book was hot, with steamy sexy times that were not only scorching, but emotional, and this was one of my favorites of the series.

I recommend this title.

Lexi realized she was in serious trouble the minute the words left Lucas’s mouth. Hell, she’d realized she was in trouble the minute she opened her mouth. What was she thinking? She knew damn well how to behave in a dungeon, but something about this Master made her want to push him. Damn it. She’d been this way all of her life. She had to push. She thought about taking a step back, but before she could make her feet move, Master A had her in a fireman’s hold. “Hey!” She shouted as her world upended. She turned her head up to throw a desperate look Lucas’s way. Lucas stood there, a stony cold look on his face. In that moment, he was all Dom, and she’d never seen him look hotter. There was a confidence about him she had rarely seen when he was around her. Lucas was utterly in command at work, but his surety faltered when she walked into the room. Even when he performed a scene with her, she knew he worried about her comfort. He didn’t look worried now. He looked ready. Her heart started to pound as Master A turned, and she lost sight of Lucas. “I need a chair, Lucas.” The words came out of the Master’s mouth like a judge delivering a sentence. “Yes, Sir.” Lucas’s words were silky smooth. There was not a hint of hesitation now. She could hear him moving to do Master A’s bidding. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked, though she was a bit less hostile now. She’d fucked up. She was glad Julian wasn’t around to witness it, though Leo would probably tell him. Tears pricked her eyes. Damn, she was proving to Leo she couldn’t handle the lifestyle. “Look, Sir, I’m sorry. It was wrong of me to be rude to you, but I was merely pointing out that Lucas and I had a plan for tonight.” Reason. She could reason with him, surely. It worked on all the men in her life. Of course, usually she was looking at them instead of trying to plead her case to a group of back muscles. The muscles were unbelievably tight, but his skin—oh, his skin had been decimated in his lower back. It was a mess of white, puckered flesh, and she could see both neat, surgical lines, and jagged edges. She reached out to touch the mass of scars, but she was jerked back over his shoulder and set on her feet before she could make it. She wobbled on her heels, but Master A’s big hands held her shoulders. “I don’t think you understand how this is going to go, sub. I am the Master, and you are the one being punished. I won’t put up with a spoiled princess telling me how her punishment will go. It will go the way I say it will go. First, you will pay for the insult to me, and then we’ll proceed to the sawhorse.” “I don’t like the sawhorse.” The words came out breathy and small, because she was beginning to understand that this was serious. Master A didn’t look like he was planning on giving in. And she hated being called a spoiled princess, but a part of her worried that he was right. The last few years, she’d allowed herself to become spoiled and dependent. She’d fled from everything that hurt her. She’d hidden. She’d let her stepfathers and Lucas coddle and provide for her so she didn’t have to face the truth. Master A didn’t flinch. “I don’t care. Lucas has done the best he can, but the truth is he wasn’t trained to be a Dom. He might enjoy it from time to time, but he prefers bottoming. You require a firm hand. If you don’t want it, then you’re free to leave. No one is holding you against your will. This is all about consensual play, so you have to make the choice. Do you want the session to continue?” She hated this part. This was the part that she’d never understood. She had to make the choice, and she couldn’t put it off on anyone else. She wanted for him to simply do it. Then she could blame him later, but that wasn’t what The Club was about. She’d been coming here for over a year, and she finally had to decide to make the choice—stay and put herself in the hands of a stranger, or go and never know what it was like. And then there was the fact that Master A was right. Lucas needed something she couldn’t give him. She cast her eyes down submissively. How bad could it be? “Yes, Sir.” “Then strip.”

Offering medical care in war-torn regions gives her the purpose she needs to carry on. When she meets her gorgeous Aussie protector, she knows she’s in too deep, but nothing can stop her from falling head over heels in love. But after one amazing night together, Brody walks away and never looks back. Stephanie is left behind…but not alone. A secret that will change both their lives A year later, Stephanie runs afoul of an evil mercenary who vows to kill her for failing to save his son. She runs to the only people she trusts, Liam and Avery O’Donnell. She hasn’t come alone and her secret will bring her former lover across the world to protect her. From Liberia to Dallas to Australia’s outback, Brody will do whatever it takes to protect Stephanie from the man who wants to kill her, but it might be her own personal demons that could destroy them both.

This book felt really different, and I am not actually all that sure why. It was a romance, obviously. and, it was in the Masters and Mercenaries series...yet it felt really different. Maybe it was Stephanie's secret (that you find out right away) and the difference that it gave the story, but I really enjoyed it. And, as this is pretty far into the connected series (the book is a standalone but still connected to the other stories) it was nice that I still was able to feel that this was a story about fresh characters.

Brody and Stephanie have a connection that neither of them intended, and I liked that there were not really any games around this. Yes, there was a misunderstanding, but the reasons around this were reasonable and you believed in it...heck, I think I have done the same thing he does. Maybe not to this extreme, but I think we have all done this.

I liked the way they met, I liked that Stephanie was allowed to be independent, even though Brody was not the biggest fan of her independence. I liked that she was strong, and that she was capable, and that there was not really the assumption that she was not capable of taking care of herself.

Stephanie did take a little longer than I thought she should to figure out how Brody really felt about her, but the payoff to that was a lovely scene at the end that really pulls at your heart.

The pacing toward the end was a little slower than it was at the beginning, and I think there were some areas that I thought moved too slowly, but overall I enjoyed this title.

I recommend this title.

The door slammed and she suddenly found herself with her back against it. Brody crowded in, taking up all the space and staring down at her. His body brushed hers and she found both her wrists captured in one of his. He dragged them over her head, forcing her chest to come out, breasts skimming along his body. “I shouldn’t do this.” Tough chick was winning. Steph let her take over. It was surely better than the desperate girl who lived inside her. She kept asking for love and affection and getting swatted away. This was the next best thing, possibly the only thing she would ever get. “Then don’t. Let me go and I won’t bother you again.” “No, you’ll go find Ezra Fain and bother him,” Brody said on a growl. “Somehow, I don’t think he’ll find me a bother.” She’d barely spoken two words to the man, but she wasn’t going to admit it. It was better to let Brody think she wasn’t a love-starved girl. “He won’t fucking find you anything at all. If you’re determined to not sleep alone tonight, you can damn well do it with me.” His mouth came down on hers and every inch of her skin came alive. His kiss was overwhelming, hungry. There was no slow meshing of mouths. He took her, his tongue surging inside and dominating her own. He let go of her hands and started to explore her body. His hands were on her hips when he came up for air. “I’m leaving in the morning. I’m going back to London and I can’t come back.” She’d known that would probably be his answer. She’d known he wouldn’t want to stay and she couldn’t leave. “One night. That’s all I want.” It was all she could have. It had been foolish to think it could be any different. His mouth came down on hers again and she let herself get swept away. One night and her life would go back to normal. One night and then she would be alone again. His hands started to roam over her and she tried to forget all the reasons why this was a bad idea. He stepped back, his entire body set in hard lines. He strode over to the bed and sat down. “Take off the gown. It’s pretty, but I want to see you.” She hesitated, all her insecurities coming to the forefront. Somehow, she’d thought he would simply take her. “Let me get the lights.” He was back in her space again, his hand wrapping around her wrist. “I didn’t say turn off the lights. I said take off the gown. How am I going to see you if you turn off the lights?” “Brody,” she began. He was having none of it. “You got on your knees in front of me and you said you knew what you were offering me. The first thing you were offering me was obedience. The second was your body. You’re giving me neither right now.” His voice had gone midnight dark and something about the tone made her soften. He was right. She did know what she’d offered him and now she was trying to have it all her way. There was nothing wrong with her body. It was feminine and she was healthy. What was she afraid of? “All right.” He let go of her wrist and sat back down, looking like a damn king waiting on his concubine’s performance. For all his “I’m nothing but a grunt” talk, the man could be incredibly arrogant, and damn if she didn’t find it sexy as hell. Something about that voice let her know that everything was going to be fine. He was past the point of rejection. He was in and that meant he would play her Dom for the night. He would take care of her. She was as safe with him in the bedroom as she’d been in the field. At least she was safe for the night. In the morning she would be in a world of hurt, but she wasn’t thinking past tonight.

And every night brings her closer to realizing he might be the man for her. As Drew's feelings for Shelby grow, so does the danger. From the streets of Dallas to Austin’s high-tech business world, Drew and Shelby play a game begun twenty years before—a game they will win, or die trying.

The more I read of this series, the more fun they are as you start to have an idea what happened, and the reasons behind the cover up and the lies of the events of their childhood.

Drew and Shelby start as a contract, as a way for her to investigate the situation without arousing suspicion. At least that is what Drew tells himself, and her. The reader quickly discovers that Drew wants something real with Shelby, he just has absolutely no idea how to achieve it. And, this is the interesting part of the story, as each of them are drawn to the other, and come to love one another, but their personalities and the things they need from one another are fighting against what they need to be happy.

It gets a little convoluted in the middle and a little tough to follow all of the players and all of the plots, although I am not sure the story is possible to be told without it.

I also had a small issue with something that was thought a lot but not verbalized. While as reader I knew what they were each thinking, it also needs to be something I know the characters are sure of. And, in this case, the lack of the verbalization (after a comment that it hadn't been) was an issue. I know this is vague, and I am trying not to put something into the mind of someone that may have not been a previous issue.

I think I just made that more, not less, confusing.

This is not a standalone, at least I don't think it is, as there is no way you will have enough of an idea of the characters and the past events for it to really make sense. I guess you could read it as a standalone, maybe, but I think there are parts that will be too confusing.

Kind of like this review. Trying to be vague, without spoilers and still get my opinion into words was not easy. I enjoyed the book. I liked Drew. He is the most compelling of the Lawless family as he is the one who sort of took on the leadership of the family and the responsibility of keeping them together. Watching him figure out how to balance that while falling in love with Shelby was a fun ride.

I thought Drew was a little more developed in this case than Shelby, but I also think this is because of the previous books. He is not a completely new character at the beginning of this book, and she is...so I think some of the seeming imbalance came from that.

I do recommend this title.

Until his mother uses an ancient law to force her son into marriage. His prospective queen is a buttoned-up intellectual, nothing like Kash’s usual party girl. Still, from the moment of their forced engagement, he can’t stop thinking about her.

Dayita Samar comes from one of Loa Mali’s most respected families. The Oxford-educated scientist has dedicated her life to her country’s future. But under her staid and calm exterior, Day hides a few sexy secrets of her own. She is willing to marry her king, but also agrees that they can circumvent the law. Just because they’re married doesn’t mean they have to change their lives. It certainly doesn’t mean they have to fall in love.

After one wild weekend in Dallas, Kash discovers his bride-to-be is more than she seems. Engulfed in a changing world, Kash finds exciting new possibilities for himself. Could Day help him find respite from the crushing responsibility he’s carried all his life? This fairy tale could have a happy ending, if only they can escape Kash’s past…

Lexi Blake is a favorite of mine, and I love the whole 1001 Dark Nights series. Such a fun idea, to tell numerous compelling and shorter stories to take up an evening.

I really enjoyed this one. the characters were interesting, and I loved that you got to meet Kash as a much younger man, and on a very pivotal day in his life, before the real story began. Day, well, you like her, you like who she is, and you like that she is not afraid to be the person that she is.

There were a couple of elements of this story, and it is what I would call light BDSM that were different, which I will not spoil here, but I enjoyed them as they are not the common direction to take a story like this.

I thought Lexi Blake told quite a complete and well balanced tale, with developed characters, in a short novella, which is not something that is easy to do, and it was done well, despite being set in a fake country...which really doesn't matter in relation to the plot of the story, it just happens to be something that I am never totally positive is necessary.

Do I wish there was more of their story? Yes, but that is part of the challenge of a novella, to tell a complete story in the shorter time...it does often leave you wanting more, but in this case because you like the characters not because you feel you didn't get a complete story.

I recommend this novella.

“Are we a happy couple?” “I don’t think we’ve had time enough to be sure of that yet, but I know we were once.” She’d thought it through in a way she never had before. She had a much different view of those months with Kash in England. “You were courting me back then, weren’t you? You wanted me to be your girlfriend.” He sat down in the plush chair that dominated the sitting area portion of his bedroom. Normally they stayed in the living room, but he’d wanted more privacy. This was the only place in his suite that wasn’t covered by CCTV, the only place where they could truly be alone. Everything about the space was masculine and decadent, including the man himself. With his hair disheveled and his chest on display, it wasn’t hard at all to see him as a primal male. One she’d dearly enjoy taming. “I don’t think you realized it at the time.” She was willing to admit her faults. “I didn’t. I had my nose in a book most of the time back then and I had little experience with men. No, I had no idea you were interested in me beyond copying my notes from class when you slept in.” “It would surprise you to know that I often thought about sleeping in with you.” His voice had gone low and gentle. “I was crazy about you back then, Day. I find myself in the same position today, but I don’t want to scare you. I know you think we should take this slow and I will honor your wishes, but I want this marriage to work. You see me as a playboy, but I don’t want to be some forty-plus player who trades on his money to keep young girls around him. I think it might be time for me to find out if I can be the king my father would have wanted me to be.” It was all she needed to hear. If he wanted to try, she was ready. Despite his reputation, she’d fallen right back into a peaceful friendship with him. He’d been the old Kash, supporting her when she needed it. He’d asked her questions about her work with the education department and then gave her ideas on how to handle the parliament. He hadn’t told her what she should do. He’d suggested, debated. “I think you’ll find me less averse to giving this marriage a real try than you think. I was planning on talking to you about using the Palm Ceremony to begin to explore what we could be as a couple.” He frowned. “I’m not sure what that means. You want to talk? Or have counseling? Because that sounds terrible.” “I was talking about sex, Kashmir. I thought we could use this time to see if we’re sexually compatible.” He popped up out of his chair like an eager puppy. “Yes. I think that is a brilliant idea. We should start now. Don’t worry. I intend to be gentle with you.” She didn’t move at all. “Like you are with your lovely flowers?” “Women deserve a man’s care,” he said quietly. “Day, I can’t erase my past.” “I don’t want you to.” He misunderstood her problems with his statement. “But I do need you to understand that I’m not one of those flowers. I’m not here to sit at your side and bat my eyelashes in the hopes that you’ll buy something for me. I don’t work like that. I don’t care about your money.” “That is easy for you to say. You’re about to have access to all of it, aren’t you?” He had a point. “Even if I wasn’t, that wouldn’t be why I would want you, Kash. Sit down. We have some things to talk about before we get started. Come here close to me.” He moved to the chaise she was sitting on, lowering himself down with a sullen frown. “I knew there would be talking.” She was fairly certain his lovely flowers did very little talking, but he would get used to it. “Why did you want me back then?” “I liked you. I liked talking to you. I liked being around you. I rather liked who I was when I was around you.” His expression softened. “I don’t think you knew how alluring you were to someone like me. You didn’t understand how beautiful you were, so you didn’t use it against me. Most women do.” “Well, that happens when you surround yourself with women who are mostly valued for their looks. I don’t blame them. They’ve been told their beauty is the only thing worthy about them. If you want to meet women who don’t feel that way, you should probably expand out of models and actresses.” “Well, you would be surprised how many gorgeous, sexy physicists turn me down because I’m not smart enough for them.”
