Oh I'm going to love this series...obviously...it's my 1st 5 star read of 2024.
It's also no surprise that it's Kristen Proby. I always love her books...but a single dad rancher with an age gap was destined to be a winner. Add in how much I loved Remington and Erin and I devoured this one.
It's not enough to say that I loved it without giving the reasons, so in no particular order, I loved the small town setting. I think I am drawn to small town stories because I like the idea of living in one but wouldn't be good with the reality. So I enjoy it in books.
I liked the secondary characters. I'd read the prequel, which added to this. But I thought the characters were strong and woven into the story in a way that allowed it to add to the story while getting to know them, which is a difficult balance and hard to get perfect, especially in the first book in a series. To be honest, the fact that this book was excellent and the first in a series is a lot of the reason it's a 5 star for me.
I loved Remington. It's tough to write a grump who is also appealing and I enjoyed that part of the grumpy was that he wasn't spending the time with his family and was so involved in work it was impacting who he was. It's realistic and it made him less of a grump and more of someone who cares deeply.
And that right there was why I was so invested in his relationship with Erin. I believed it from the beginning and I loved how he was with her, even when he was trying to decide if it was a good idea.
Everything about this book just worked for me and I can't wait for the next one.
