Bitter Love by Emily Goodwin - ARC Review & Release Blitz

If there's one thing I know to be certain in life, it's to expect the unexpected. I never expected to become a teen mom or have to flee a toxic relationship years later. And I certainly never expected to go head-to-head with Jacob Harris, doctor of veterinary medicine, to prove I'm worthy of running the struggling rescue full of misfit animals I suddenly inherited.

Jacob is as smug as he is good looking, and I refuse to let that cocky grin or sharp jawline distract me. I won't go down without a fight, and this time, it'll be easy to stand my ground when my opponent is someone I can't stand--even though my body reacts whenever he's around. This time I'm not backing down no matter how much he gets under my skin.

But the more I push, the more he pulls...until I don't know what I'm more at a risk of losing: the rescue or my heart.

The beginning of this one was a little darker than I was expecting.  But, I also thought it felt very real and definitely made the book fell different from others that I have read.

The darker start is not necessarily in a bad thing, as it definitely set up the events of the story for Josie to move to a new town.  But, it also overshadowed the relationship with Jacob and Josie, as the book took on a lot more seriousness around her life and in a lot of ways left Jacob as outside of the main action and almost feeling like a secondary character.

I think it's that he felt like a secondary character that kept me from really feeling their connection.  There was a lot happening in this book, and it was a slow burn.  Generally, I am fine with a title being a slow burn as the connection is developed and the chemistry is explored...but in this one, the slow wasn't to give their attraction time to develop from animosity, but rather to allow Josie to deal with the other things in her life.

I also found that Jacob's character bothered me in the same ways that he did Josie, which works for the story, but also let him continue to feel like more of a background character than the hero of the story.

I did enjoy it overall, and the last 20% of the book is definitely about their connection, so I am able to recommend it...with the caveat that I would have liked to see a little more of their relationship than we got in this one.
