Game of Chance

A former Marine and Las Vegas vice cop, Nathan Fox has seen it all and then some. Heading up security for the Onyx Casino is tame compared to his dark past, but it's not his only job. Working for the Reliance Group is his real passion project. His current case: a missing woman. His mission: to find her. Easy enough, until he finds himself tangled up with sexy Nicole Hutton, a stubborn—and stunning—journalist who's nosed her way into his investigation . . . and into his dirty, erotic fantasies.
Resisting Nicole is impossible, and he soon discovers that in this dangerous high stakes game of chance, falling in love is the greatest risk of all.

Game of Chance was my first standalone novel from Erika Wilde. She has partnered up before with another author and I enjoyed those books so I thought I would give this a try. I'm so very glad I did. This story was sexy, sweet and had me on the edge of my seat suspense wise at times. There were also some moments that broke my heart.

I really liked Nicole right from the start. She's a confident woman, professionally and personally. She's trying to catch her big break as a journalist and when she's presented an opportunity-albeit very accidentally-she grabs it and runs with it. I liked that Nicole wasn't looking for a relationship-a character trait that is usually assigned to the male characters in romance novels-so that was refreshing. Her growth and strength in this book was good to me.

Nathan was hot! He has some issues from his past (who doesn't) but has such a good heart. He's not looking for a relationship either so when he agrees to do something for a friend and winds up meeting Nicole, it's no surprise that they tumble into bed after. But it's how they act around each other after that I enjoyed. Watching Nathan realize that he could be happy, and should be happy was very satisfying.

These two had insane chemistry. I felt it and believed in it right from the very beginning. I feel that their relationship was paced exactly right for them which was great. Nothing felt rushed or forgotten for me there.

I will say this book has some issues that could be triggers for some (sex trafficking). It's hard to say without spoiling it, as the blurb doesn't imply it-and I almost wish it had. I will say the issues were well presented and well written, I just wasn't expecting to have them as a main focus. I applaud the author for not shying away from a prevalent topic.

This book is a great start to this author's Vegas Heat trilogy. It's full of heat and suspense. I would recommend this title and look forward to the next in the series.

I enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to dive into book number two. Overall, I liked this book. It wasn't my favorite of the three in this series, but it was a fast, well written read.  While part of the Vegas Heat series this can be read as a standalone.

Sean and Zoe share a connection-one that Zoe isn't aware of when the book begins. Now sometimes that trope can really work, but here I just didn't buy into it fully. I liked these two separately, and I believe Sean redeemed himself, but I never fully connected to them as a couple. Did they have some steamy moments? Yes. But other than that I just thought they were ok together.

Part of my issue may have been that there was a second romance brewing in this book, one between Zoe's best friend and her ex. I love second chance romances, they're one of my favorite things to read, but I felt like these two pulled away from the main characters a bit. Did I enjoy reading about them? Absolutely. I just think I would have enjoyed both couples more if I had read them separately.

This book was tightly written. The plot flowed well and kept my interest. This was a quick read for me and overall I did enjoy it. I would recommend this book.

Last Chance

As the Executive Casino Hostess for The Onyx in Las Vegas, Valerie Downing is always on the lookout for the night's biggest winners. When she spots a man―one of the sexiest she's ever laid eyes on―generating huge excitement at the craps table, she knows she's in luck. Her goal: To make sure the high rollers stay at her hotel, and that any further gambling is invested right back into the casino. His aim: To enjoy some other "perks" that Valerie might have to offer…
Turns out Chase Pierson is already a VIP guest who happens to be working with Valerie's boss on a top-secret mission for the Reliance Group―one for which she too has been recruited because of her psychic abilities. But Valerie, bold and gorgeous as she is, is first and foremost a professional. No fraternizing with Onyx clientele is her motto…except this hard-bodied, infuriatingly charming client is tempting her to break all the rules.
LAST CHANCE contains light paranormal elements (heroine has psychic abilities)

Last Chance was my favorite book in the Vegas Heat series. From the moment I started reading I was sucked in and couldn't stop. Now, there are some things that might not be for everyone (it's not a spoiler that the heroine has psychic abilities) but I thought it was smartly written and well done.

I loved Valerie. I loved how complex of a character she was, getting to explore her depths was fascinating. She's gifted, which adds a unique twist to this book. It was a different perspective to add to this romantic suspense story.

I'm going to say it took me a little bit to warm up to Chase-and I'm kind of glad. It kept me intrigued. His gift is a little bit different from Valerie's, and I'll say that it definitely piqued my interest. I thought his profession was really cool-a modern day treasure hunter with a twist.

These two had instant chemistry. I mean, it was off the charts. But they were also determined that it was not going to turn into anything. It's always fun to see how wrong the hero and heroine can be when it comes to what they think they'll be getting out of a relationship. I rooted for them as they went on this wild chase and loved every minute of it.

This book is a standalone within a series. Had I started with this book I would have absolutely gone back and read the previous two. The writing was flowed, the pacing worked. I enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend it.
